Experimental Forest Introduction
Chiayi Experimental Timber Yard was originally the site of the old prison dormitory complex, which had been abandoned for over a decade and fell into disrepair. In recent years, the city government has promoted the "Recreating the Timber Capital Historical Site Project," transforming two four-unit dormitory buildings into the Experimental Timber Yard. This is the first experimental timber factory in Chiayi City, serving as a base for experiments, exchanges, and training of talent in the timber industry, with the hope that the characteristics of Chiayi City as a timber capital can be recognized and developed further. The Experimental Timber Yard is located in the central area of the old prison dormitory complex, utilizing the two four-unit Japanese dormitories for a restructured design, shaping two distinct timber practical areas in the north and south buildings. The north building preserves the remains and appearance of the Japanese dormitory, using structural design techniques to transform traditional timber construction into a new timber space, while also incorporating modern seismic-resistant construction methods to enhance the support and seismic capacity of traditional wooden buildings. The south building is based on the Japanese dormitory, showcasing innovative features with new wood materials and modern structures, creating a spacious interior with large-span structures. The south building serves as the timber factory, while the north building will be used for research, teaching, and exhibition spaces, allowing both buildings to demonstrate the integration and dialogue between traditional and modern timber construction techniques.
