Chen Cheng-po Studio Introduction
The pride of Chiayi people - painter Chen Cheng-po! Mr. Chen Cheng-po was an outstanding pioneer painter in Taiwan. His artwork has been auctioned for over NT$100 million, and his famous painting "The Evening Glow of Tamsui" was sold for approximately NT$212 million at the Christie's auction in Hong Kong in 2007, setting the highest record for Taiwanese paintings at international auctions. Many of Mr. Chen's works depict the landscapes and people of his hometown, and the scenery and objects of Chiayi are spread and renowned through his artistry. In March 2001, the Chen Cheng-po Cultural Foundation provided nine replica oil paintings, which were erected in Chiayi Park. This was the first instance of combining oil paintings with park attractions in Taiwan, significantly enhancing the artistic atmosphere of Chiayi Park. Mr. Chen Cheng-po possessed a noble character and outstanding artistry, and is a shared pride of the people of Chiayi. While appreciating his artworks, let us once again salute Mr. Chen Cheng-po. - Chen Cheng-po's Profile: - Born in 1895 in Chiayi - Graduated from the National Language School's Teacher Training Department - Studied at the Tokyo National School of Fine Arts (predecessor of Tokyo University of the Arts) - Specialized in Western painting at the Tokyo National School of Fine Arts for two years - In 1929, went to Shanghai to serve as a professor and department head at the Shanghai Art College - Returned to Taiwan in 1933 - Founded the Taiwan Yang Art Association in 1934 - Served as the first senator of Chiayi City in 1946 - Died in 1947 due to the February 28 incident, at the age of 53 - Created the large oil painting “Outside Chiayi Street” in 1926, which was selected for the 7th Imperial Art Exhibition in Japan, the first Taiwanese painter to be selected, bringing pride to Taiwanese in Japanese society, followed by multiple selections in subsequent years. - His work "Clear Stream" was selected at the first national art exhibition held in Shanghai in 1931, representing contemporary artists and participating in the World’s Fair in Chicago, USA.
