The common pride of Chiayi - Painter Chen Cheng-po! Mr. Chen Cheng-po is a distinguished pioneer painter from Taiwan, whose paintings have been auctioned for over NT$100 million. His famous work "Tamsui Sunset" sold for approximately NT$212 million at a Christie's auction in Hong Kong in 2007, setting the highest record for Taiwanese paintings in international auctions. Many of Mr. Chen's works depict the scenery and people of his hometown, allowing Chiayi's landscapes and objects to be celebrated and known worldwide through his artistry. In March 2001, the Chen Cheng-po Cultural Foundation provided nine replica oil paintings, which were installed in Chiayi Park, marking Taiwan's first integration of oil paintings with park attractions, greatly enhancing the artistic atmosphere of Chiayi Park. Mr. Chen Cheng-po, known for his noble character and outstanding artistic skills, is a source of pride for the people of Chiayi. As we appreciate his works, let us once again pay tribute to Mr. Chen Cheng-po. • Brief profile of Chen Cheng-po: - Born in 1895 in Chiayi - Graduated from a national school teacher training program - Studied at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts (now the Tokyo University of the Arts) - Specialized in Western painting for two years at the graduate school of Tokyo School of Fine Arts - In 1929, went to Shanghai to serve as a professor and department head at the Shanghai Art School - Returned to Taiwan in 1933 - Founded the Chiayi Art Association in 1934 - Served as the first senator of Chiayi City in 1946 - Passed away in 1947 due to the 228 Incident at the age of 53 - Created the large oil painting "Outside Chiayi Street" in 1926, which was selected for the 7th Imperial Art Exhibition in Japan, making him the first Taiwanese painter to be selected, raising Taiwan's profile in Japanese society; he was subsequently selected multiple times. - In 1931, at the first National Art Exhibition held in Shanghai, his work "Clear Stream" was selected among twelve contemporary painters and represented at the World Fair in Chicago.
