Wenshan Civic Center Introduction

Originally an abandoned and dilapidated principal's dormitory of Muzha Elementary School, it has been renovated and transformed into an elegant building that blends the simplicity of Japanese architecture with modern sensibility, symbolizing the meaning of heritage and the integration of old and new. The establishment of the Wenshan Civic Center has a challenging history. Since the suggestion meeting for the land use of the Wenshan Civic Center was held in May 1999, the planning process has involved multiple discussions with community planners, representatives of civic groups, parents from the school, and local residents through events such as "Local Leaders Workshops," "Wenshan Civic Center Public Hearings," and "Wenshan Civic Center Overall Planning Meetings." This consensus on planning and utilization was reached, and in 2002, a groundbreaking ceremony was held, followed by a grand inauguration ceremony on October 19, 2002. Thus, the Japanese-style building, constructed in 1927, gained a new appearance and took on the important mission of developing the local cultural heritage, industrial characteristics, and fostering community consciousness, making it one of the best representatives of repurposing idle spaces. Muzha Elementary School was founded six years before the establishment of the Republic of China and was originally a branch of Jingwei Public School. Principal Liu Shanming took office as the second principal in 1946. He was known for his strict management and active participation in local public affairs, nurturing countless talents, and was deeply respected by the local community. Principal Liu retired in 1969 and passed away in 1982, while his wife continued to live in the principal's old dormitory filled with memories until her passing in 1992, after which the old dormitory was left unused. The Civic Center is located directly across from the administrative center of Wenshan District, adjacent to Muzha Elementary School, bordered by Jingmei Creek to the east. The site covers an area of 636 square meters, with divided spaces for a service desk, auditorium, outdoor plaza, and multi-functional outdoor area, which can be used for educational activities, public art, large tree classrooms, and various exhibition spaces, embodying significant local cultural and humanistic values. The new building of the center is a newly constructed two-story building, displaying historical exhibits, district development history, old historical photographs, and local industrial characteristics. To enhance cultural quality of life, it regularly invites artists, cultural workers, and community groups to hold various art exhibitions on the first and second floors and also provides rental services. The old building has been renovated for exhibitions and is available for public and group rentals for discussions, book clubs, and other intellectual activities. Wenshan is a great place characterized by "rich culture, beautiful mountains, and clear waters," with a wealth of cultural history and industrial features. A visit to the elegant and historically rich Civic Center not only provides insights into Wenshan's past and present but also allows people to experience the beauty and elegance of a historically significant building. We sincerely look forward to the arrival of all citizens!
