Ximending Introduction
Ximending gets its name from the Japanese occupation period when most of the residents lived within Taipei City, and this area outside the West Gate served as their primary recreational spot. In the early days, the main commercial activity here was centered around cinemas, eventually followed by department stores and other entertainment venues. After the completion of the Zhonghua Market in 1961, Ximending briefly became the largest commercial entertainment center in the country. Ximending boasts many famous landmarks and shopping centers, such as the Instagram hotspot Rainbow Square, the historic Ximen Red House over 100 years old, the iconic Wanhua Commercial Building, and the American-style Ximending American Street; it is also a gathering place for diverse cuisines including Hong Kong-style, Taiwanese-style, American-style food, beverages, desserts, cafes, and bars. After a period of lull in the 1980s, Ximending transformed into Taipei's first iconic pedestrian area due to the promotion of the MRT and government planning. On holidays, it is always bustling with crowds, filling the arcades and streets to capacity. Whether it's food, goods, clothing, or entertainment, this place offers all sorts of trendy and interesting products, making it the liveliest street in Taipei. It is not only a gathering spot for youth culture and street performances but also a popular dating spot for young couples. The American Street next to Wenchang Street is filled with American-style hip-hop fashion and unique outfits, adorned with graffiti, giving Taipei an exotic flair. Today, Ximending not only witnesses history but also leads a new generation of pop culture, attracting nostalgic middle-aged people reminiscing about the past alongside trendy young people competing for attention, creating an exchange of completely different lifestyles that meet the needs of various groups.
