Soaking in hot springs to relieve fatigue is a wonderful experience. An Tong Hot Spring, with a history of over a century, was once known as "An Tong Zhuang Nuan" and listed as one of Hualien's Eight Scenic Spots. The nearly transparent hot spring water, with a temperature of 66 degrees Celsius, allows visitors to enjoy unique warmth in the winter whether soaking in a hot spring house, hot spring guesthouse, or in an open-air hot spring pool by the stream. In 1904, a Japanese camphor gatherer discovered the hot spring by the An Tong Stream. By 1930, the Japanese built a police guesthouse here and established a public bath, gradually developing it into a hot spring destination. Over time, the Yuli Hot Spring Public Bath was renamed An Tong Hot Spring Grand Hotel, yet the operators still preserve the wooden bungalows built during the Japanese colonial period. The exterior of the buildings and the tatami-matted Japanese-style rooms are well-maintained, and a sign reading "Yuli Hot Spring Public Bath" hangs above the entrance, giving the entire building a tranquil, pleasant, and antique atmosphere. Besides soaking in the An Tong Hot Spring, there is also an ancient trail called the An Tong Crossing, established during the Qing Dynasty, which is about 13 kilometers long. The scenic views along this trail are original and beautiful, imbued with historical significance, making it another great activity option for those visiting An Tong for hot springs.
