In the chilly winter, traveling in the Hualien-Taitung Valley is not only about enjoying the endless canola flower fields stretching to the horizon, but also about soaking in hot springs to relieve fatigue, which is a major earthly delight. Antong Hot Springs, with a history of over a century, was once listed as one of the eight scenic spots of Hualien under the name "Antong Warm Bath." The almost transparent hot spring water reaches a temperature of 66 degrees Celsius. Whether soaking in a bathhouse, a hot spring inn, or in the open air by the stream, visitors can enjoy the unique warmth of winter. In 1904, a Japanese camphor collector discovered the hot springs by the Antong Creek. By 1930, the Japanese built a police guesthouse here and set up a public bath, gradually developing it into a hot spring destination. Over time, the Yuli Hot Spring Public Bath was renamed Antong Hot Spring Grand Hotel; however, hot spring operators still preserve the wooden bungalows built during the Japanese occupation. The building's exterior and the tatami-floored Japanese-style rooms are well maintained, and a sign reading "Yuli Hot Spring Public Bath" hangs on the entrance, giving the entire building a tranquil, pleasant, and antiquated ambiance. In addition to soaking in the Antong Hot Springs, there is also the Antong Cross-Mountain Ancient Path, opened during the Qing Dynasty, which is about 13 kilometers long. The scenery along the way is pristine and beautiful, rich in historical significance, offering another activity option for visitors to enjoy after their hot spring experience.
