Fuzheng Settlement Introduction
The simple and unadorned Eastern Fujian charm witnesses the migration of settlements. A must-visit spot on Dongju Island is Fuzheng Settlement, where the plain scenery leaves a deep impression. There is a local proverb in Dongju: "Summer in Fuzheng, winter in Dapu." Since Dapu Village is located at the southern tip, it can shield from the northeast winds in winter, while in summer, the southwest winds blow, making Fuzheng Village at the northern end of Dongju Island the most suitable for habitation. This allowed the early residents of Dongju Island, as per the proverb, to shuttle between the two villages for fishing according to the seasons. Fuzheng Settlement was once the most prosperous village in Dongju. However, with a decrease in fish catches and a decline in residents and military presence, its former glory has faded, leaving behind only a series of dilapidated stone houses accompanied by the Dongju Island Lighthouse and the Baima Zunwang Temple, which still quietly guards the village. The architectural style of the settlement is mostly simple two-slope roofs and rubble construction, creating a different atmosphere compared to Qinjiabin. Only about ten households reside in the village, making it tranquil and unpretentious, with its own unique flavor. In recent years, the government has vigorously promoted the preservation of settlements, and Fuzheng Village has gradually revived from being deserted, becoming a precious cultural heritage of the local area. The sight of empty buildings may evoke melancholy, but the serene beauty it exudes is a unique cultural ambiance of Matsu's traditional settlements. Entering Fuzheng Settlement, one encounters pure and tranquil beauty. The rooftops and brick walls display the vicissitudes shaped by time. From a distance, the vibrant flame-shaped fire wall of Baima Zunwang Temple stands out remarkably. It is said that the temple was built during the Daoguang era of the Qing Dynasty. In 2000, due to the aging of the building's structure, it was demolished and rebuilt. The main deities enshrined are Baima Zunwang and his wife, along with the accompanying deity, Lady of Waters, and Marshal Ma, safeguarding the village.
