Ledao Bay Introduction
The valley reservoir beside the coastline can be viewed from the high points of the Round-the-Island North Road, showcasing the entire landscape of Liao Dao Ao Reservoir. Located to the north of Xiju Island, the reservoir is positioned about one-third of the way along the left side of its inverted triangle top. Initially oriented northeast and later shifting to face north, it is an open-type valley where silt has accumulated at the mouth, forming a bay known as Liao Dao Ao. Due to the unfavorable connotation of the name, it was later renamed Liao Dao Ao, reflecting its phonetic sounds. In order to address the long-standing drought conditions and water shortages on Xiju Island, residents resorted to digging wells, which still proved insufficient for their daily needs. Therefore, the military decided to construct a dam in this valley to collect water, with assistance from troops stationed in the area. This reservoir serves multiple functions, including civil supply, defense, and irrigation, covering a catchment area of approximately 12 hectares. Today, Liao Dao Ao has become a prime spot for residents to enjoy the beautiful bay scenery and the surrounding mountain views. On clear days, the interpretive sign at the Round-the-Island North Road provides an excellent vantage point for admiring the mainland's mountains and sunsets. Along the round-the-island route, abandoned outposts can be found scattered throughout, with some lookout points featuring steps that lead down to the coastline, making them great places for exploration.
