Encountering the Formosan Sika Deer Matsu's Japanese Little Nara Daqiu Island, known as "Sika Deer Island," is located to the north of Beigan and adjacent to Gaodeng Island. It can only be reached by inter-island ferry. Once, it was inhabited by residents and military personnel, with a peak population of over 300 people. However, due to changes over time and outmigration to the southern and northern parts of Beigan, Daqiu Island became uninhabited. Today, it is the only uninhabited island in Matsu that can be visited. The island features a 400-500 meter long ecological trail, where visitors can see various adorable Formosan sika deer and remnants of military facilities. After decades, the deer have adapted to the island's environment, wandering freely and beginning to reproduce. The deer population on the island has multiplied several times since their initial release.
