Niujiao Settlement Introduction
A rustic and beautiful fishing village by the mountains and the sea, Nangan Island in Matsu resembles the shape of a rhinoceros. The Niujiao Village, located at the northeast corner of Nangan, resembles a rhinoceros horn, which is how it got its name. Built against the mountain wall, Niujiao Village was a thriving fishing community before 1960, due to its location at the confluence of the north and south currents, making it Matsu's largest fishing village. The nearby waters were abundant with fish, and the harbor was often filled with over 200 fishing boats. During its prosperous period, many flower rock seal engraving workshops were established, making it the most populous settlement on the island. However, with the decline of fishing resources and administrative units moving away, the village gradually fell into decline and was renamed "Fuxing Village" in the 1970s. Since 1998, a group of local visionaries has initiated a community movement to preserve the Niujiao settlement and give new life to old houses, starting with the vision of "Cultural Life, New Form of Old Houses." They renovated old houses, reused vacant spaces, and organized various cultural activities to revitalize traditional spaces and architecture, reshaping community value. The idle old houses transformed into cafes, guesthouses, and restaurants have become great spots for leisure and nostalgia. The Niujiao Trail in Niujiao Village, made of stone, is located on the left side of Niujiao Bay and is a great place to enjoy the breathtaking scenery of Niujiao Harbor. The trail winds along the coast and is approximately 300 meters long, with its entrance located behind the Wuling Temple. A viewing platform has been built atop a two-story camouflage building, and from there, you can enjoy a distant view of Beigan Island!
