Matsu Nangan, a quaint and beautiful fishing village by the mountains and sea, is shaped like a rhinoceros. The Niugang settlement is located at the northeastern corner of Nangan, resembling a rhino's horn, which is how it got its name. Built against the mountain wall, Niugang was a thriving fishing village before 1960 due to its location at the confluence of northern and southern ocean currents. It was once the largest fishing village in Matsu, with fish schools abundant in the nearby waters and numerous fishing boats often docked—over 200 at times. During its prosperous period, various buildings for Huagang stone seals were established, making it the most populated settlement on the island. However, as fishing resources dwindled and administrative units relocated, the village began to decline and was renamed "Fuxing Village" in the 1970s. In 1998, a group of local intellectuals initiated the "Long Stay in Niugang" community movement to preserve the settlement and rejuvenate old houses. Starting from the vision of "Cultural Life, New Faces of Old Houses," they began renovating old buildings, repurposing idle spaces, and organizing various cultural activities, revitalizing traditional spaces and architecture, and reshaping community value. The idle old houses transformed into cafes, guesthouses, and restaurants became great spots for leisurely nostalgia. The Niugang Trail, made of stone, is located on the left side of the Niugang Harbor entrance and is a great place to admire the picturesque scenery of the Niugang Harbor and the sea. The trail winds along the coast and stretches for a considerable length.

Niu Jiao Village Introduction

The simple and beautiful fishing village by the mountains and the sea, Matsu Nangan Island is shaped like a rhinoceros. The Niujiao settlement is located at the northeastern corner of Nangan Island, resembling a rhinoceros horn, hence the name. Built against the mountain wall, Niujiao settlement thrived before the 1960s due to its location at the intersection of northern and southern ocean currents, making it the largest fishing village in Matsu. The nearby waters were abundant with fish, with many fishing boats lining the ocean, often hosting over 200 vessels. During its prosperous times, numerous houses for the seal carving industry were established, turning it into the most populated settlement on the island. However, as fishing resources dwindled and administrative units relocated, it gradually declined and was renamed "Fuxing Village" in the 1970s. Since 1998, a group of local visionaries has initiated a community movement to preserve the Niujiao settlement, which focuses on renewing old houses and revitalizing traditional spaces through art and cultural activities. The old houses have been renovated into cafes, guesthouses, and restaurants, becoming great places to relax and reminisce. The Niujiao Trail, made of stones, is located on the left side of Niujiao Bay, making it a perfect spot to enjoy the stunning views of Niujiao Harbor blending with the sky and sea. The trail winds along the coast for about 300 meters, with the entrance located behind the Wuling Temple. A two-story barracks with a camouflaged exterior features a viewing platform, offering a chance to gaze far toward Beijian Island!
