Fushan Zhaobi - Waiting for Dawn Introduction
As the Taiwan Strait ferry approaches Matsu's Fuao Harbor, four red characters - "Waiting for War" - immediately catch the eye, standing majestically on Fuqing Ridge in Nangan. It is currently one of the most famous symbolic landmarks for entering and exiting Matsu, sharing a fine reputation with the "Do Not Forget the Struggle" at Mount Taiwu in Kinmen. Below "Waiting for War" is the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Park, featuring a white staircase that resembles a white dragon winding around a massive rock, making it very eye-catching. This Fushan Stone Wall, located on the hillside southwest of Fuao Village at the "Waiting for War Memorial Park," is a rectangular building with two underground levels and five above ground. The four characters "Waiting for War" were handwritten by former President Chiang Kai-shek during his inspection of defense in Matsu in July 1958 to encourage the military and civilians of Matsu to remember their aspiration for national restoration. The characters were then enlarged from the original inscriptions to establish the monument. However, it is said that it took considerable effort to mount the four large characters on the towering archway, as the letters had to be projected from the mountain base at night before construction could begin. The Waiting for War Memorial Park initially served as an exhibition hall showcasing the daily lives of the military and civilians in Matsu, and after being idle for a while, it was transformed into a cultural and artistic performance space by local artist Tsao Kai-chi. The park features an observation deck for visitors to overlook and admire the panoramic view of Fuao Harbor, where the sea and sky blend, creating a unique charm.
