Paper Dome Introduction

The Paper Dome, a modern architectural wonder supported by 58 paper tubes, forms a geometric rectangular corridor with a softly translucent canopy that creates a gentle and sacred atmosphere. This unique Paper Dome is located in the new Hometown Learning Center near the ecologically rich Taomi Ecological Village, making it an ideal place for summer activities such as lotus viewing, butterfly watching, or frog ecology observation. It is perfect for families looking for an outdoor ecological adventure, and guided tours are available to explore the story of the Paper Dome. (Image source: Paper Dome official website guided map) The story of the Paper Dome began in 1995, after the Great Hanshin Earthquake in Japan, when architect Shigeru Ban built a paper tube church as a temporary worship space for the collapsed Hattori Church. After successfully fulfilling its purpose, this paper dome, symbolizing the significance of earthquake reconstruction, has traveled across the ocean to the Taomi community, continuing its mission of comforting hearts after disasters. Upon entering the Paper Dome, visitors are amazed not only by the beauty of the building but also by how the flexible paper has transformed into a resilient structure supporting the whole church, allowing one to feel the vitality that emerges from resilience after disaster. The adjacent Learning Center, made of steel, bends the material into various shapes, transforming the hard and cold characteristics of steel, echoing the strong structure of the "Paper Dome," originally built from soft and fragile paper, thus forming an interesting contrast. The best time to visit the vibrant area for lotus viewing is from May to July, while night-time frog watching takes place from April to September with guided tours available. In addition to appreciating the distinct architectural styles of the Paper Dome and Learning Center, the area is planted with various butterfly-attracting plants, where butterflies can be seen dancing in every corner. The ecological ponds on both sides are rich with aquatic plants, and at night, one can hear the chorus of frogs. During summer, this location becomes a hot spot for lotus viewing, with vast fields of pink lotus flowers swaying in the breeze, allowing visitors to enjoy delicious meals in the restaurant while taking in the beautiful scenery, making for a truly delightful time.
