Paper Dome Introduction
The Paper Dome, a modern church supported by 58 paper tubes, features a geometric rectangular corridor with a softly illuminated canopy that creates a gentle and sacred atmosphere. This unique Paper Dome is located in the Taomi Ecological Village near the rich natural ecology of the region, making it an excellent spot for summer activities like lotus viewing, butterfly watching, or observing frog habitats, ideal for families seeking a nature excursion. Visitors can also schedule guided tours to learn about the story of the Paper Dome. The story of the Paper Dome began after the 1995 Great Hanshin Earthquake in Japan, when architect Shigeru Ban built a paper tube church as a temporary place of worship for the collapsed Takatori Church. Now, after its success, this Paper Dome symbolizes the significance of rebuilding after an earthquake, having traveled across the ocean to the Taomi community to continue its mission of healing hearts after disaster. Stepping inside the Paper Dome, one can admire the beauty of the structure and the transformation of soft paper into a resilient form that supports the entire church, as well as feel the enhanced resilience of life after disaster. Next to the church, the "Learning Center," made of steel, bends the material into various shapes, curving the cold and hard properties of steel, contrasting with the strength of the Paper Dome originally made from soft, fragile material, creating an interesting juxtaposition. The best time to enjoy the lively park for lotus viewing is from May to July, with night-time frog viewing available from April to September through guided tours. In addition to appreciating the two architecturally distinct structures, the park is filled with various butterfly-attracting plants, making butterflies dance in every corner; on either side, ecological ponds host a wealth of aquatic plants, and at night, the croaking of frogs fills the air. In the summer, this area becomes the most popular lotus viewing spot, with swathes of pink lotus flowers swaying in the breeze, allowing visitors to enjoy beautiful scenery while dining in the restaurant, creating a truly delightful experience.
