Nanjing Sugar Factory Leisure Plaza Introduction
In the early post-World War II period, sugar was one of Taiwan's major industries and a primary export product. The climate and soil of the Chiayi area were particularly suitable for sugarcane cultivation, which led to the establishment of the Nanjing Sugar Factory, one of the three major sugar factories at the time, located in Shuishang Township, Chiayi County. Founded by the Toyo Sugar Co., Ltd. in 1908, the factory had a sugar manufacturing facility capable of processing 3,200 tons of sugarcane daily, producing 20,000 tons of premium granulated sugar annually. With the flourishing sugar industry, Shuishang thrived for a time, but unfortunately, after the decline of the sugar industry, its former glory faded. As the sugar production lost market competitiveness, the Nanjing Sugar Factory actively transformed itself and is now developing in a diversified direction. In addition to its original "sugarcane processing" and "pig farming" businesses, which are moving towards mechanized farming and specialized management, it has developed multiple transformation ventures. Among these, the orchid industry has established an excellent international reputation. The factory area has been planned with a modern leisure market selling Taiwan Sugar products. The factory's production of ice pops offers diverse flavors, is delicious and affordable, making it a popular attraction for tourists, causing the market to always be bustling with visitors. Next to the market, there is also a flower exhibition area and a children's recreational playground, providing visitors with various options. The leisure plaza of the sugar factory features displays of old locomotives, retired tanks, warplanes, and anti-aircraft guns, along with a barbecue area for public recreation, and a childhood tunnel for children's exploration. Located directly across from Nanjing Train Station, the conveniently accessible Nanjing Sugar Factory offers not only a taste of its frozen treats but also a chance to fully appreciate its historical transformation, with shade from large trees, old buildings, and sugarcane carts, bringing a nostalgic atmosphere.
