Lakeside Camp (W027 Base) Introduction
The "Hushay No. 1 Barracks," also known as "W-027 Station," is located next to the entrance of the Nanshan Forest Road in Wuzhitou. It was an important stronghold in the early conflict between Taiwan and China. Built between 1986 and 1988 using local granite mixed with reinforced concrete, the internal tunnels were entirely hand-dug. During construction, the constant rush to complete the project attracted nighttime reconnaissance from the opposite shore, leading to heightened security measures, including the use of .50 caliber machine guns for deterrent fire and the placement of nail board devices for protection, making the process quite arduous. After military operations concluded, the barracks gradually fell into disuse. However, following a project by the Kinmen National Park Administration, the site was revitalized with the help of He Qiaozhu (36 years old) and Chen Yaozhang (37 years old), both of whom had served in Kinmen. They meticulously recreated the original layout of the site as authentically as possible while incorporating artistic creations, using paintings to depict military life within the abandoned spaces of the "Hushay No. 1 Barracks." The site reopened in February 2015, hoping that visitors can experience the unique historical context of the military base through the murals and original displays.
