Sticky rice cakes made from glutinous rice don't need much introduction and are naturally a famous snack in the town. Most shops still follow the traditional method of making "tube rice cakes", though the ancient clay rice cake tubes have been replaced by iron ones. Nonetheless, rice cakes are still a common snack found throughout Xiluo. Past the bustling market on Jianxing Road, there is a small shop across from the Xiluo Fruit and Vegetable Market. It has no sign, only two yellow flags that say "rice cakes." The owner, now in the second generation and running the shop for 50 years, jokingly mentioned that even the flags were made just two months ago in response to customers' requests. The steamers used for making the rice cakes have a strong traditional flavor from 50 years of use. The rice cakes here are a local secret, dense and chewy with well-defined grains, yet fragrant, smooth, and tender—truly delicious.
