Xiluo Black Rice Cake Introduction
The rice cake made from glutinous rice needs no further introduction, as it is a well-known snack in the town. Most of the vendors still carry on the traditional method of making "tube rice cake," although the ancient ceramic rice cake tubes have been replaced with metal ones. Nevertheless, rice cakes can still be found all around Xiluo. After passing the bustling market on Jianxing Road, there is a small shop across from the Xiluo Fruit and Vegetable Market, with no sign but two yellow fabric flags that say "rice cake." The owner, who is in the second generation and has been running the shop for 50 years, humorously mentioned that even the flags were made only two months ago in response to customer requests. The steamer used for making rice cakes has a rich old-fashioned flavor cultivated over the past 50 years. The rice cakes here are known only to locals, and they are dense and chewy, with distinct grains that are fragrant, smooth, and tender—truly delicious. For 50 years, the shop has only sold rice cakes, crispy pork rib soup, and bowl cake, making it a traditional establishment that insists on maintaining authentic flavors.
