Hongya Study Introduction
Inspired by Chiang Wei-shui, the bookstore has hosted over a thousand lectures in more than 20 years and claims to be "the most active independent bookstore south of Zhuoshui River." From the authoritarian era to the digital age, Hongya Bookstore, covering an area of 10 ping, is filled with the ideals and persistence of its owner, Yu Guo-hsin. The selection of books on the shelves is never influenced by commercial interests, and here you can find a comprehensive collection of literature and history publications from Chiayi and Taiwan, along with books on literature, history, and philosophy. Yu Guo-hsin believes that opening a bookstore can change the cultural habits of a city, connect and promote cultural activities, and present interesting local scenery. With the arrival of the digital era, the print market faces significant challenges, and the future of physical bookstores is worrisome, with many relying on food services and product selection to sustain their economy. However, Hongya Bookstore insists on continuing to sell books, as this embodies the true function of a bookstore. Inspired by the pioneer of Taiwan's democratic movement, Chiang Wei-shui, the bookstore has been hosting cultural lectures every Wednesday for over 20 years, with more than 1,200 held to date. Who is the most prominent lecturer? The answer is Wu Nien-jen, and it is said that on the day of his lecture, attendees spilled out onto the street.
