Shoushan Guanyin Temple Introduction
Stepping through a century of time, we arrive at Taoyuan's oldest site of faith, the Shoushan Rock Guanyin Temple, founded in the seventh year of the Qianlong era (1742). This temple, originally named "Lingtian Temple," has a history of over 280 years and is the oldest temple in the area. It was renamed by Emperor Qianlong. Not only is it a revered place of worship, but it is also designated as a municipal historic site and was once selected as one of "Taiwan's Top 100 Religious Sites," making it worth a visit for travelers interested in cultural charm. Distinctive Guanyin Statue and a Strong Assembly of Deities The main deity enshrined in the temple is Guanyin Bodhisattva, depicted in the rare male crown form, which is quite different from the familiar feminine Guanyin image. The hall also houses offerings to Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, Manjushri Bodhisattva, Guan Gong, Kṣitigarbha Bodhisattva, the Lord of Time, and the Eighteen Arhats. The rear hall, Lingxiao Hall, enshrines the Jade Emperor, Queen Mother of the West, and the Three Officials, allowing worshippers to pay homage to multiple deities in one visit—sincere prayers will surely be answered! Must-see Highlights: Nine Dragons Wall, Divine Turtle, and Crane The Nine Dragons Wall, made of ceramics, is the largest outdoor ceramic art piece in Taiwan, handcrafted by the national treasure Liu Mingfu, presenting a majestic scene of nine dragons in motion. The divine turtle, shaped like a dragon-headed turtle in the lotus pond, symbolizes longevity and blessings, complemented by elegant cranes, rockeries, and water features, making it one of the favorite photo spots for devotees and travelers alike! A Century of Artifacts Telling Stories The temple preserves multiple ancient plaques and historical artifacts from the Qing Dynasty, including the precious plaques "Compassionate Sail for Prosperity" donated by Hadang A during the Jiaqing period and "Buddhism Has No Bounds" by Lin Wenchai, recording the construction and renovation history of the temple. There are also stone incense burners and cloud boards from the Jiaqing period quietly displayed in a corner of the temple, waiting for travelers to pause and appreciate the history. Vibrant Temple Festivals, the Popular Peace-Turtle Every year, the "Peace Turtles" event on the 14th day of the Lunar New Year, the Guanyin Birthday on the 19th of February, and the Guanyin's Enlightenment Day on the 19th of June are the most festive times at Shoushan Rock Temple. Especially during the Peace Turtles activity, which symbolizes prayers for a safe and smooth year, it attracts a significant number of participants and is a classic event blending religion and local culture. Hidden Cherry Blossom Viewing in Spring at the Back Mountain Garden The "Shoushan Rock Garden" behind the temple is a must-visit cherry blossom secret spot every spring, with pink mountain cherry blossoms and Yoshino cherries in full bloom. The garden harmonizes beautifully with the ancient temple, stone bridge, and corridors, creating a picturesque spring atmosphere. Strolling through the flowers in the gentle breeze allows one to forget the hustle and bustle, immersing visitors in an ethereal experience—it is one of Taoyuan's most relaxing spots in spring.
