Shoushan Guanyin Temple Introduction
Step back in time to one of Taoyuan's oldest places of worship, the Shoushan Temple of Guanyin, established in the seventh year of the Qianlong era (1742 AD). This is the oldest temple in the area, boasting a history of over 280 years. Originally named "Lingtian Temple," it was later renamed by Emperor Qianlong. Not only is it a popular pilgrimage site, but it is also designated as a municipal historic site and was selected as one of the "Top 100 Religious Sites in Taiwan," making it worth a visit to explore its cultural charm. The Main Hall's unique Guanyin statue depicts a rare male figure adorned with a crown, which is distinct from the more familiar female Guanyin image. Inside, it also houses other deities such as Samantabhadra, Manjushri, Guan Yu, Ksitigarbha, the Tai Sui Star Lord, and the Eighteen Arhats. The rear hall, the Lingxiao Palace, is dedicated to the Jade Emperor, the Queen Mother of the West, and the Three Officials, allowing worshippers to pay their respects to multiple gods in one visit. Must-see highlights include the Nine Dragon Wall, the divine tortoise, and the crane in front of the temple. The Nine Dragon Wall is the largest outdoor ceramic art in Taiwan, handcrafted by national treasure Liu Mingfu, showcasing a magnificent scene of dragons. The divine tortoise in the lotus pond features a dragon head and tortoise body, symbolizing longevity and fortune, complemented by elegant cranes, rock formations, and a pond, making it a favorite spot for devotees and travelers alike to capture memorable photos. The temple preserves several ancient plaques and historical artifacts from the Qing Dynasty, including the precious plaques "Cifan Guangji" gifted by Hada A in the Jia Qing period and "Buddha's Teachings are Boundless" by Lin Wenchai. These relics document the temple's construction and renovation history, along with stone incense burners and cloud boards from the Jia Qing period, quietly displayed in a corner of the temple for visitors to admire and appreciate its history. The temple fairs and rituals are bustling, with the "Peaceful Tortoise" being the most popular event. Key celebrations include the "Peaceful Tortoise" on the 14th day of the lunar new year, Guanyin's birthday on February 19th, and Guanyin's enlightenment day on June 19th, which are the most lively moments at Shoushan Temple. The Peaceful Tortoise event, in particular, symbolizes the prayer for a peaceful and smooth year, attracting a large number of participants in this classic combination of religion and local culture. In spring, the "Shoushan Temple Garden" behind the temple is a hidden gem for cherry blossom viewing, featuring blooming mountain cherry and Yoshino cherry trees. This annual destination is perfect for experiencing the picturesque atmosphere created by the ancient temple, stone bridge, and corridors. Strolling among the flowers in the gentle breeze allows one to forget the hustle and bustle, instantly entering a realm of serenity, making it one of the most beautiful spring relaxation spots in Taoyuan.
