Shoushan Guanyin Temple Introduction
Step back in time and visit Taoyuan's oldest place of worship, the "Shoushan Rock Guanyin Temple," established in the seventh year of the Qianlong era (1742 AD). This temple, originally named "Lingding Temple," has a history of over 280 years and is the oldest temple in the area. It was renamed by Emperor Qianlong. The temple not only has a flourishing incense economy but is also designated as a municipal historic site and has been selected as one of the "Hundred Scenic Spots of Taiwanese Religion," making it a worthwhile visit for travelers exploring cultural charm. The main deity in the temple is Avalokiteshvara, depicted in a rare male crowned form, contrasting with the more familiar female representation. The main hall also houses offerings to Samantabhadra, Manjushri, Guan Yu, Kṣitigarbha, the God of the Year, and the Eighteen Arhats. The rear hall, Lingxiao Palace, is dedicated to the Jade Emperor, Queen Mother of the West, and the Three Officials, allowing visitors to worship multiple deities in one visit. A must-see highlight: the Dragon Wall, Divine Tortoise, and Cranes The Dragon Wall, made of ceramic and the largest outdoor ceramic artwork in Taiwan, was crafted by national treasure Liu Mingfu and features roaring dragons. The divine tortoise in the lotus pond, shaped like a dragon-headed turtle, symbolizes longevity and good fortune. Coupled with elegant cranes, rockeries, and a pond, it’s one of the favorite photo spots for worshippers and travelers alike! Centuries-old artifacts tell a story, ancient plaques and stone carvings worth a closer look The temple houses many Qing Dynasty ancient plaques and historical artifacts, including precious plaques like "Compassionate Sail and Broad Relief" donated by Hadang A during the Jiaqing era, and "Buddhist Law is Boundless" by Lin Wenchah, which document the temple's construction and renovations. Also on display are stone incense burners and cloud boards from the Jiaqing era, quietly awaiting travelers to stop and appreciate their historical significance. Lively temple festivals and the popular Peace-Turtle event The "Peace-Turtle" event on the fourteenth day of the lunar New Year, Avalokiteshvara's birthday on the nineteenth day of the second month, and the day of Avalokiteshvara’s enlightenment on the nineteenth day of the sixth month are the most bustling festival moments at Shoushan Rock. The Peace-Turtle activity, especially, symbolizes a prayer for a safe and smooth year ahead, attracting numerous worshippers as it combines religion with local culture in a classic event. A seasonal cherry blossom paradise in the backyard garden The "Shoushan Rock Garden" behind the temple is a must-visit cherry blossom paradise every spring, where the delicate mountain cherry blossoms and Yoshino cherries bloom, creating a picturesque scene with the ancient temple, stone bridge, and corridors, evoking a poetic spring vibe. Strolling amidst the blossoms in the gentle breeze allows one to forget the hustle and bustle, instantly entering a serene world—one of the most beautiful relaxation spots in Taoyuan during spring.
