Luchin Wadan Memorial Park Introduction
The Lexin Wadan Memorial Park is located beside the Roman Highway. At the entrance, there is a nostalgic photo wall that records the accomplishments of Lexin Wadan. As you enter the park and climb up the wooden observation platform, you can enjoy the magnificent views of the surrounding scenery, with the blue sky dotted with a few white clouds. In spring, you can see the cherry blossoms blooming along the roads, or during the harvest season of millet, vast golden fields sway gently in the wind, contrasting beautifully with the blue sky. However, this park, which offers such beautiful scenery, also hides a sad story. Lexin Wadan was a leader of the Atayal tribe and one of the first Atayal people to receive modern medical education, graduating from the predecessor of National Taiwan University College of Medicine—the Taiwan Governor-General's Medical School. He was employed as a public physician by the Taiwan Governor-General’s Office and practiced medicine in the Atayal villages under the name Dr. Dutoji Saburo, promoting medical concepts and serving as a mediator between the Japanese and the Atayal tribe. After the restoration of Taiwan, Lexin Wadan changed his name to Lin Ruichang and was elected as a member of the First Temporary Council of Taiwan Province, actively fighting for the rights of his people. However, he became a political victim during the White Terror period. Consequently, later generations built this park to commemorate this great leader of the Atayal tribe.
