Lushan Watan Memorial Park Introduction
Leshin Watan Memorial Park, located alongside Roma Road, features a nostalgic photo wall at the entrance, documenting the achievements of Leshin Watan. As you enter the park and climb up the wooden observation deck, you can enjoy stunning views of the surroundings, with the blue sky adorned by a few white clouds. In spring, the cherry blossoms along the road bloom beautifully, and during the season of ripe millet, vast golden fields sway in the wind, creating a picturesque scene against the blue sky. However, behind this beautiful landscape lies a tragic story. Leshin Watan was a leader of the Atayal people and the first Atayal to receive modern medical education, graduating from the predecessor of the National Taiwan University College of Medicine—the Taihoku Colonial Medical School. He served as a public physician for the Taiwan Governor-General's Office under the name Doctor Dōkei Saburō, practicing medicine in Atayal villages and promoting medical concepts, eventually becoming a buffer between the Japanese and the Atayal community. After Taiwan's restoration, Leshin Watan changed his name to Lin Ruichang and was elected as a member of the first Taiwan Provincial Temporary Assembly, actively advocating for the rights of his people. Unfortunately, he became a political victim during the White Terror period. In honor of this great Atayal leader, this park was established by future generations.
