Cathedral Introduction
The Donggang Catholic Church was founded by Father Lin De-ming of the Dominican Province in 1955, originally located at the site of the current Xinji Junior High School's early childhood education building. In 1960, it moved to Zhongshan Road. The church features a modern architectural design with a slanted roof, inspired by the tents that the faithful lived in during their exodus from Egypt, with the slanted edges pointing towards the sky, symbolizing the guidance towards heaven. The construction funding for the church did not come from Taiwan but rather from donations from the Dominican Order abroad. When the church was first established, due to language differences, the priest delivered sermons in both Mandarin and Taiwanese, which was an interesting aspect that set it apart from other missionary locations. The church also operates Xinji Junior High School, the Holy Family Kindergarten, and the Xiaohui Elderly Care Center, benefiting the residents of Donggang. After nearly half a century, the Donggang Catholic Church has become a new landmark in Donggang.
