Cathedral Introduction
The Donggang Catholic Church was established in 1955 by Father Lin De-Ming of the Dominican Order. The original location was at the current Xinji Junior High School's Early Childhood Education Building. In 1960, it was relocated to Zhongshan Road. The church is a modern architectural structure with a unique sloped roof, symbolizing the tents that the faithful lived in during their exodus from Egypt, with the slanted peak pointing towards the heavens, representing the guidance towards paradise. The funds for the construction of the church did not come from Taiwan; they were all donated from overseas by the Dominican Order. At the beginning of its establishment, due to language differences, the priests delivered sermons in both Mandarin and Taiwanese, making it an interesting phenomenon compared to other missionary locations. The church also runs Xinji Junior High School, the Holy Family Kindergarten, and the Hsiao Ai Nursing Home, benefiting the residents of Donggang. After nearly half a century, the Donggang Catholic Church has become a new landmark in Donggang.
