Jialulan Recreation Area Introduction
Kararuan is an Amis tribe settlement located in Donghe Township, Taitung County. In the indigenous language, it is called "kararuan," meaning "a place for washing hair." Legend has it that the stream in the past was rich in natural minerals, which made the hair exceptionally smooth and shiny after washing, hence the name. The recreation area was formerly a derelict earth dumping site of an air force base. After multiple ecological renovation efforts, it has transformed into a coastal attraction that combines natural landscapes with artistic creations. The park offers stunning views of the Pacific Ocean and Dulan Mountain, with expansive grassy areas interspersed with pavilions and observation platforms. There are also numerous art installations made from driftwood, creating an atmosphere filled with nature and creativity. At every moment—morning, afternoon, or dusk—the light changes beautifully. When night falls, it becomes a star-gazing haven with no light pollution, where one can lie on the grass, listen to the sound of the waves, and gaze at the starry sky and Milky Way, experiencing the most romantic starry night in Taitung. This place is not only a scenic spot but also embodies rich stories and culture. Visitors can stroll along the coastal trail, climb the observation platform for a distant view of Green Island and the Coastal Mountain Range, or sit quietly to listen to the sea breeze and the interplay of light and shadow. From sunrise to starry night, Kararuan is a must-stop attraction along the East Coast journey.
