Maolin Purple Butterfly Valley Introduction
If you want to explore the wonders of the "Purple Butterfly Valley," you can head to the Maolin Purple Butterfly Ecological Park in the Maolin District of Kaohsiung City, which is the main activity location during the annual butterfly-watching season. By walking along the park’s trails, you can reach the Purple Butterfly Valley butterfly-watching trail and personally experience the spectacular sight of thousands of butterflies flying. "Purple Butterfly Valley" is not a specific geographical location, but rather refers to an ecological phenomenon where a group of butterflies congregate for wintering, primarily found in the mid- to low-altitude mountainous areas of Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung, traditionally inhabited by the Paiwan and Rukai peoples. From October to February of the following year, over a million Purple Butterfly migrate from the north to southern Taiwan, arriving at the warm and sheltered valleys at the foot of Dawu Mountain, forming a world-class butterfly spectacle. The Maolin Purple Butterfly Valley is on par with America’s "Monarch Butterfly Valley" and is one of the last two wintering butterfly valleys in the world, also rated as a three-star must-visit attraction by the Michelin Green Guide Taiwan. Every winter, visiting this natural treasure allows you to witness the incredible sight of Purple Butterflies fluttering and to feel the most precious ecological gem of Taiwan.
