Maolin Purple Butterfly Valley Introduction
If you want to explore the wonders of "Zidi Valley," you can head to the Maolin Butterfly Ecological Park in the Maolin District of Kaohsiung City, which is the main activity location for the butterfly-watching season every year. By walking along the park's trails, you can reach the Zidi Valley butterfly-watching trail and personally experience the spectacular sight of thousands of butterflies in flight. "Zidi Valley" is not a specific geographic location but refers to the ecological phenomenon of groups of butterflies gathering for wintering, mainly found in the low to mid-elevation mountainous areas traditionally inhabited by the Paiwan and Rukai tribes in Kaohsiung, Pingtung, and Taitung. From October to February of the following year, over a million Purple Butterfly migrate from the north to southern Taiwan, arriving in the warm and sheltered valley at the foot of Dawang Mountain, creating a world-class butterfly spectacle. Maolin’s Zidi Valley is renowned alongside North America's "Monarch Butterfly Valley," as one of the last two wintering butterfly valleys in the world, and it has been rated as a three-star must-visit attraction by the Michelin Green Guide Taiwan. Every winter, visit this natural treasure and witness the incredible sight of Purple Butterflies dancing in the air, appreciating one of Taiwan's most precious ecological gems.
