Batongguan Historic Trail Introduction
The Batongguan Historic Trail passes through Hougou坑 in Shanchongli, which was once a settlement of the Pingpu people. This area is situated on a small flat hill, making it easily defensible. Archaeological finds such as stone knives, stone axes, and stone drills prove that this site was once a living settlement. During the late Qianlong period, it served as a military base for Fukang'an in suppressing the Lin Shuangwen Incident, and the Ganquan Well became a place of settlement. The story of Ganquan Well has two parts: one is that the spring water comes from the nearby Nonghui Mountain and never runs dry, with its water level higher than the surrounding ground; the other is the legend that water taken at noon during the Dragon Boat Festival is used for bathing to ward off disasters. Additionally, the Stone Guardian beside the spring well was originally meant to accompany and protect the well; however, due to its location on the essential route of the Batongguan, it has become one of the only two Stone Guardians along the Batongguan Sheliao route. This place also marked the boundary of the "Tuniu Red Line" established during the early Qing Dynasty, serving as an entry point for opening up mountains and managing the indigenous tribes.
