Tuku Township Farmers' Association Octagonal Warehouse Introduction
The "Octagonal Seed Warehouse" of the Tuku Township Farmers' Association, commonly known as the "Octagonal Warehouse," was completed on November 30, 1961. This regular octagonal structure made of cement bricks stands in the heart of Yunlin County, which was formerly known as "Tuku," an area rich in agriculture. Currently, there are only a few octagonal warehouses remaining in Taiwan, with three known to be in Yunlin. Among them, only the one in Tuku Township is actively used, while the others are mostly idle, holding significant cultural and historical value related to the industry. Each of the eight sides of the octagonal warehouse is equipped with louvered windows, and ventilation holes are located at the bottom of the walls. Stairs on either side of the entrance lead to the mezzanine for convenience in transferring seeds into the warehouse. The main entrance faces south, with ventilated high windows on the upper level and ventilation holes at the bottom of the walls. Inside, the seed storage walls are first lined with sugarcane boards and then covered with metal sheets to ensure ventilation, dryness, heat insulation, and moisture prevention for proper seed preservation. The octagonal architectural feature ensures good earthquake resistance, excellent ventilation and lighting, and the shortest and fastest internal circulation paths, with a structure similar to a solid and durable circular form.
