Tuku Township Farmers' Association Octagonal Warehouse Introduction
Tuku Township Agricultural Association’s "Octagonal Seed Warehouse," commonly known as the "Octagonal Warehouse," was completed on November 30, 1961. The octagonal-shaped cement brick building stands in the agricultural-rich area of Yunlin County, historically known as "Tu-ku." Currently, only a few octagonal warehouses remain in Taiwan, with three known to exist in Yunlin, and only the one in Tuku Township is actively used; the others are mostly abandoned, making it a site of significant industrial culture and historical value. The octagonal warehouse features louvered windows on all eight sides, with ventilation holes at the bottom of the walls. Staircases on both sides of the entrance lead to a mezzanine, facilitating the movement of seeds into the warehouse. The main entrance faces south, with high ventilation windows above and ventilation holes at the bottom of the walls. The internal seed storage walls are first covered with sugarcane boards and then with metal sheets, all designed to ensure ventilation, dryness, heat insulation, and moisture prevention for the proper preservation of agricultural seeds. The octagonal design provides excellent earthquake resistance, good ventilation and light, and the shortest and quickest circulation paths inside, with a structure that is nearly circular, solid, and durable.
