Shuilian Cave Introduction

The Shui Lian Dong Trail is located next to the Shishan Visitor Center. The trail is short and gentle, offering picturesque scenery, making it suitable for all age groups to enjoy the mountain and forest landscape. Upon entering the Shui Lian Dong Trail, it feels like stepping into a different world, with the sounds of insects and birds and a canopy of greenery, creating a stark contrast to the nearby road. As you slowly descend the steps, a massive cave comes into view; this is Shui Lian Dong, the largest natural cave in Shishan. Named for the spring water flowing down the rock wall above, which resembles a curtain of water at the cave's entrance. Inside Shui Lian Dong is a century-old temple, Fan Yin Temple. In 1902, Master Wei Kai discovered Shui Lian Dong and built a temple within it, primarily dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha. Due to the sounds of the nearby flowing water, which reverberate through the temple like a sacred chant, it was named Fan Yin Temple. It is the northernmost temple among the many in Shishan, at the lowest elevation, and the only temple not built in the traditional architectural style. On the other side of the Shui Lian Dong barrier, one can see schools of fish such as the Horse Mackerel and Taiwanese Stonefish swimming in the crystal-clear gravel stream, along with dragonflies and various birds, making it truly a paradise. In just a short distance, you can enjoy such a rich feast for the body and spirit. Consider planning a leisurely trip around Shishan, combined with the adjacent Shui Lian Bridge Trail and Tengping Ancient Road.
