Hsiang Wu-Lung Jiao-Zhi Pottery Introduction
Jiaozi pottery integrates techniques of modeling, painting, and firing, making it one of the most valued folk crafts in Taiwan’s traditional arts. Jiaozi pottery is widely used in general architecture and temple decorations due to its rich shapes, vibrant colors, and an air of auspiciousness and joy. The Chiayi region is the birthplace of Jiaozi pottery, which the Japanese once referred to as "Chiayi ware." Mr. Hsiao Wu-long was born in Chiayi City in 1948 and was inspired by master Luo Yong-yu, a great carving master. In 1980, he apprenticed under Luo Yong-yu, a renowned figure in Taiwanese carving, to learn this nearly lost ancient art. In 1993, he established the Hsiao Wu-long Jiaozi Pottery Studio. Mr. Hsiao Wu-long is one of the few experts in mang carving in the country. His works have received the Excellence Award in the craftsmanship category of the 47th Provincial Arts Exhibition and the third prize in the sculpture category of the 4th National Craft Competition.
