Hsiao Wu-Long Glazed Tile Introduction
Jiaozi pottery integrates techniques such as kneading, painting, and firing, making it one of the most valued folk crafts in Taiwan's traditional arts. With its rich shapes, splendid colors, and an atmosphere of auspiciousness and joy, Jiaozi pottery is widely used for decoration in general buildings and temples. The Chiayi area is the birthplace of Jiaozi pottery in Taiwan, which the Japanese used to call "Chiayi ware." Mr. Hsiao Wu-lung was born in Chiayi City in 1948 and was inspired by the master of carving, Mr. Lou Yong-yu. In 1980, he became an apprentice to the well-known Taiwanese carving master, Mr. Lou Yong-yu, to learn this ancient art that was nearly lost. In 1993, he established the Hsiao Wu-lung Jiaozi Pottery Studio, and Mr. Hsiao is one of the few experts in the art of carving. His works have received accolades, including the Excellence Award in the Craft Division of the 47th Provincial Fine Arts Exhibition and a third prize in the carving category of the 4th National Craft Competition. Today, his works are recognized and cherished by experts both domestically and internationally.
