Hsiang Wu-Long Chaozhou Ceramics Introduction
Matz pottery, which integrates techniques such as sculpting, painting, and firing, is one of the most valued folk arts in Taiwan's traditional arts. Matz pottery, known for its rich shapes and vibrant colors, is widely used in decorations for general buildings and temples, exuding a festive and auspicious atmosphere. The Chiayi area is recognized as the birthplace of Matz pottery, which the Japanese referred to as "Chiayi kiln." Mr. Hsiao Wu-lung, born in Chiayi City in 1948, was inspired by the master of Matz carving, Mr. Lou Yong-yu, and in 1980 began to learn this nearly lost ancient art under his guidance. In 1993, Mr. Hsiao established the Hsiao Wu-lung Matz pottery studio. He is also one of the few experts in Matz carving in the country, with his works winning the Excellence Award in the craft category at the 47th National Art Exhibition and a third-place award in the carving category at the 4th National Folk Art Exhibition. Today, his works are recognized and loved by experts both domestically and internationally.
