Niu Jiang Jun Temple Introduction
The Niu Jiangjun Temple is located in the Shuibufang area of Taibao City, Chiayi County, and is one of the earliest places settled by Han Chinese. It houses a black statue of a large water buffalo, accompanied by a shepherd holding a cattle whip. According to legend, when Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) came to Taiwan to cultivate the land, he brought eight water buffaloes to assist in farming. However, the task of clearing the land was extremely challenging, and with many fields and few buffaloes, these animals eventually died from overwork. In memory of the water buffalo, the early settlers built a temple dedicated to them, allowing future generations to remember the hardships faced by their ancestors. To this day, the Niu Jiangjun Temple thrives with fervent worship, attracting visitors year-round. The stone mortar in front of the buffalo is continuously adorned with fresh grass, flowers, fruits, sugarcane, and a bucket of clean water, making it a significant feature of the community.
