Niu General Temple Introduction
Niu Jiangjun Temple is located in Shuibuffzu, Taibao City, Chiayi County, which was one of the earliest places settled by Han Chinese immigrants. It houses a statue of a large black water buffalo, accompanied by a shepherd holding a cattle whip. According to legend, when Zheng Chenggong came to Taiwan for cultivation, he brought eight water buffaloes to assist in farming. However, the cultivation of wild land was very challenging, and due to the scarcity of buffaloes compared to the vast fields, these buffaloes eventually died from overwork. Later, the ancestors specifically built a water buffalo temple to honor the buffaloes and to remind future generations of the hardships faced by early settlers. To this day, Niu Jiangjun Temple remains a place of vibrant worship, attracting visitors year-round. The stone mortar in front of the buffalo is regularly adorned with fresh grass, flowers, fruits, sugarcane, and a bucket of clean water, becoming a significant feature of the community.
