Niu Jiang Jun Temple Introduction
Niu Jiangjun Temple is located in Shui Niou Cuo, Taibao City, Chiayi County, and is one of the earliest places where Han people settled and cultivated the land. Inside, there is a statue of a large black water buffalo, accompanied by a shepherd holding a cattle whip. According to legend, when Koxinga (Zheng Chenggong) came to Taiwan for land development, he brought eight water buffaloes to help with farming. However, clearing the wasteland was very difficult, and with many fields and few buffaloes, these buffaloes eventually died from overwork. Later, the ancestors built a water buffalo temple to honor these buffaloes and to allow future generations to remember the hardships faced by early settlers. To this day, Niu Jiangjun Temple remains bustling with worshippers, attracting tourists throughout the year. Fresh grass, flowers, fruits, sugarcane, and a bucket of clean water are continuously offered at the stone mortar in front of the buffalo, making it a distinct feature of the community.
