Hsiao Wu-lung Jiaozi Pottery Introduction
Jiaozi pottery integrates techniques of modeling, painting, and firing, making it one of the most valued folk crafts in traditional Taiwanese art. Jiaozi pottery is widely used in decorations for general buildings and temples due to its rich forms, splendid colors, and a vibrant atmosphere of auspiciousness and joy. The Chiayi area is the birthplace of Jiaozi pottery in Taiwan, which the Japanese once referred to as "Chiayi Yaki." Mr. Hsiao Wu-long was born in Chiayi City in 1948, and under the guidance of master carver Liu Yong-yu, he learned this nearly lost ancient art after becoming an apprentice to him in 1980. In 1993, he established the Hsiao Wu-long Jiaozi Pottery Studio, and Mr. Hsiao is among the few experts in the field of carving. His works have won the Excellence Award in the Crafts Category at the 47th Provincial Art Exhibition and the Third Prize in the Folk Art Carving Category at the Fourth National Folk Arts Competition. Today, his artworks are recognized and cherished by experts both domestically and internationally.
