Wujiang Academy Introduction

The rows of desks and chairs facing the statue of Zhu Xi create a serene atmosphere, where the sound of students reading resonates faintly in the air. In the bustling city, Wujiang Academy stands as a quiet corner, allowing visitors to deeply appreciate the diligent spirit of students in the lecture hall. It is also one of the spots included in the free guided tours of Hupu Township. Historically, Kinmen was known for its flourishing literary culture. During the Southern Song Dynasty, the philosopher Zhu Xi served as the deputy of Tong'an County during the 23rd year of the Shaoxing reign (A.D. 1153). At that time, Kinmen was under the jurisdiction of Tong'an. It is said that during his tenure, Zhu Xi visited Kinmen Island twice, greatly influencing the local people and enhancing the culture of studying among them. In gratitude to Zhu Xi, the people of Kinmen built Wujiang Academy in the 45th year of the Qianlong reign (A.D. 1780), along with the establishment of the Zhuzi Shrine behind the academy in his honor. Wujiang Academy is the only remaining one of the four ancient academies of Kinmen, while the Zhuzi Shrine is designated as a national historic site.
