Wujiang Academy Introduction

The rows of desks and chairs are facing the statue of Zhu Xi, with the sounds of students' reading resonating in the air. In the bustling downtown area, Wujing Academy is a quiet corner that allows visitors to deeply appreciate the diligent demeanor of students in the lecture hall. It is also one of the attractions included in the free tours of Houping Town. Historically, the cultural atmosphere in Kinmen was thriving. During the Southern Song Dynasty, the philosopher Zhu Xi served as the assistant registrar of Tong'an County in the 23rd year of Emperor Gaozong's Shaoxing period (AD 1153). At that time, Kinmen was under the jurisdiction of Tong'an. It is said that Zhu Xi visited Kinmen Island twice during his tenure, and the local populace was greatly influenced by his teachings, leading to an increased enthusiasm for learning. In gratitude to Zhu Xi, the locals built Wujing Academy during the 45th year of Emperor Qianlong's reign (AD 1780), and they also constructed the Zhuzi Temple behind the academy to honor him. Wujing Academy is the only one remaining of the four great academies of ancient Kinmen, while the Zhuzi Temple is listed as a national historic site.
