Autumn Bookstore Introduction

Qiu Shu Bookstore is a non-commercial bookshop, purely established by coincidence by the owner of Taichung’s 107 Gallery, Qiu Siqi, as a platform for young people in Chiayi to interact and engage in cultural salon activities. The space incorporates elements of coffee, music, and books. Under the artist's so-called "non-utilitarian" transformation, this sharp-angled triangular old house stands amidst the traffic on Forestry West Road, resembling a ship set to embark at sunset. Here, one can immerse in the sea of books, reflect in silence, or linger at the bar, seeking caffeine or engaging with contemporary thoughts! Qiu Shu Bookstore does not have specific commercial offerings; once aboard, you are free to explore. The distinctive aspects worth appreciating include the atypical bookstore space crafted by Tsai Chih-Hsien, with dialogues between new and old materials, a mix of rigid lines and soft curves, the slant of the staircase, the interplay of light and shadow from outside, freely arranged books, and ultimately, the focal point on the third floor – a suspended ship mechanism positioned at the top of the sharp-angled triangle, where one can watch the sunset from the bow at dusk, an awe-inspiring sight. Book lovers should take their time to search for treasures; these books are part of the founder Qiu Siqi’s collection, selflessly offered for reading. If you encounter him at Qiu Shu Bookstore, be sure to sit down and have a chat; that’s the right way to open up the cultural salon.
