Island Call Bookstore Introduction
In the Chiayi rear station, an old bookstore selling tofu is illuminated by the afternoon sun shining through Zhuwen Street. The golden light reflects off the entrance of "Island Calling Bookstore," a Japanese-style old house, where time seems to flow slowly. Locals refer to Chiayi Rear Station as "Beigang Che Tou," a once bustling hub for the Taiwan Railways, Alishan Forest Railway, and sugar railways. Deeply exploring old Chiayi, this is a must-mention spot. Pronounced in Taiwanese as "Island Calling Bookstore," it is immediately clear that this is a bookstore selling tofu. Earlier, a fabric banner on the windows read "We support non-GMO," later replaced with one saying "Tofu Alliance. Enjoy Our Tofu." All tofu products at Island Calling insist on using 100% locally grown soybeans from Taiwan. Not only is it non-GMO, but it also focuses on reducing carbon emissions. The handmade brine tofu pairs perfectly with Yunlin's gardenia flower oil, a match made in heaven. This firm tofu is quite satisfying, and for those wanting to take some home, be sure to bring your own containers for the tofu. If you’re in the mood for something sweet, they also offer douhua (tofu pudding), soy milk, and soybean milk tea. The bookstore's display style feels like stepping into a friend's home, with different rooms distinctly categorized, nearly devoid of any aggressive sales tactics. Picking up a book and sitting down to read is simply part of life. Image source: Chiayi City Government Tourism and News Office | Photographer: Mag.
