Island Calling Store Introduction
In Chiayi's back station, an old house bookstore selling tofu is illuminated by the afternoon sun penetrating through Zhu Wen Street, showcasing the golden light on the sign of "Dao Hu Bookstore," a Japanese-style old house, where time flows gently and distantly. The locals refer to Chiayi's back station as "Beigang Che Tou," a place that once thrived as a hub where the Taiwan Railway, Alishan Forest Railway, and sugar railroad converged. Exploring old Chiayi thoroughly, this place deserves emphasis. Pronounced in Taiwanese as "Dao Hu Ce Dian," it is immediately clear that this is a bookstore selling tofu. Initially, the banner hanging on the windows read "We support non-GMO," which was later replaced with one stating "Tofu Alliance. Let’s eat tofu." All tofu products at Dao Hu insist on using 100% domestically produced soybeans from Taiwan. Not only is it non-GMO, but it also aims to reduce carbon emissions. Dao Hu's handmade salted tofu pairs perfectly with Yunlin's gardenia oil, creating a delightful match. A solid block of tofu can indeed provide some satisfaction. If you're still interested in taking some home, remember to bring your own container for the tofu. For something sweet, there are also offerings of tofu pudding, soy milk, and soy milk tea available. The display style in the bookstore area feels like stepping into a friend's home, where different rooms are categorized uniquely, with almost no sales pressure—just casually picking up a book and reading is a way of life.
