To understand the history of Matsu, experience Matsu culture, and gain a comprehensive understanding of Matsu, visiting the Matsu Folk Museum is a must! Renovated in 2002, the Matsu Folk Museum is a building with one basement floor and four above-ground levels. The exterior of the building showcases distinctive Eastern Fujian architectural styles, featuring decorations like old wine jars, small windows, and decorations related to "Beauty Leaning," elegantly reflecting the essence of Eastern Fujian aesthetics. Inside, the museum houses many artifacts from the lives of Matsu's ancestors, with different themes on each floor, documenting everything from historical origins, terrain and landforms, everyday life, language and culture, to traditional architecture in great detail. Upon entering, the first floor plays a documentary about the military administration period in Matsu, providing an overview of life at that time, and also has an exhibition area showcasing recent archaeological achievements as well as Matsu's geographical location. The second floor displays traditional Matsu architecture and industrial aspects, while the third floor is dedicated to various customs related to religious beliefs, opera, folk music, and crafts. As you continue up, there is a public exhibition space where art pieces are often displayed. When visiting the various small islands of Matsu, be sure to allocate time to visit the Folk Museum; it will surely be a rewarding experience.
