Folklore Museum Introduction
To understand the history of Matsu and experience its culture, visiting the Matsu Folk Culture Museum is a must! Renovated in 2002, the Matsu Folk Culture Museum consists of one basement level and four above-ground floors. The building's exterior showcases distinct Minnan East features, adorned with old wine jars, small windows, and decorative elements reflecting the elegance of Minnan aesthetics. Inside, the museum houses various artifacts from the lives of Matsu's ancestors, with each floor dedicated to different themes, documenting Matsu's history, geography, daily life, language culture, and architectural customs in meticulous detail. Upon entering, visitors can watch a documentary about life during the military administration period in Matsu on the first floor, providing insights into the living conditions of the military and civilians at that time. There is also an exhibition area showcasing recent archaeological achievements in Matsu and its geographical context. The second floor exhibits traditional Matsu architecture and industries, while the third floor focuses on religious beliefs, folk music, and craft-related customs. Further up is a public exhibition space that frequently hosts art showcases. While visiting the various small islands of Matsu, be sure to set aside time to visit the Folk Culture Museum for a rewarding experience.
