Sanmin Bat Cave Introduction
The Bat Cave is located in the northern valley of Sanmin Village and is a naturally formed large cave. It is beautifully nicknamed "Water Curtain Cave" because water flows down from above the cave entrance. Due to its rugged and primitive terrain and its proximity to the valley, the Bat Cave attracts large numbers of bats to roost here, hence the name "Bat Cave." Today, the ground inside the cave is covered with red soil, which is formed from bat droppings accumulated over time, highlighting the once-thriving presence of thousands of bats and adding an air of mystery. At the end of Taoyuan 114 Line is the entrance to the Bat Cave Trail, which is approximately 600 meters long with gentle slopes and paved with stone tiles. It takes about 20 minutes to walk to the Bat Cave. Following the path, one is shaded by green trees, making the walk cool and comfortable. Along the way, you can enjoy the rich natural ecology, and if you get tired, there are wooden benches along the trail to rest for a moment. The ground features a mosaic of bat totems that brings a smile to visitors. After walking about 444 meters along the trail, you will see a viewing platform in the shape of a spiral staircase. You can follow the curved stairs to enjoy the distant view of the lush mountains, which sweeps away worries. The path leading down from the gazebo next to the viewing platform descends into a series of stair-stepped trails, where you can admire the natural scenery of the Sanmin River flowing gently, while the rugged and primitive Bat Cave is hidden within. There is a pond in front of the cave, along with a large and a small waterfall, approximately 50 feet high. When not in the dry season, you can see the waterfall mist flying and the sound of water echoing, which is quite spectacular. Stepping onto the wooden platform, the waterfall cascades down, forming a deep pool about 10 meters in diameter, with a cool and pleasant environment, perfect for seeking refuge from the heat in summer. The Bat Cave entrance is semi-circular, nestled within the cliffs by the river, about 20 meters high, 50 meters wide, and 20 meters deep. Entering the cave sideways, the interior takes on a crescent shape reminiscent of a theater, with a uniquely broad design that can accommodate thousands of people. It is quite a rare natural giant cave, providing visitors with a sense of wonder. Although the bats inside have migrated elsewhere, the deep and mysterious cave landscape continues to attract many tourists eager to explore its unique beauty.
