Tongxiao Shrine Introduction
The ruins from the Japanese occupation period feature historically significant traditional Japanese architecture. The Tongxiao Shrine, located in Hushan Park, exudes a strong Japanese shrine ambiance. It was built in 1937 and currently only the main hall foundation, the remnants of the offering hall, the approach, the worship hall, the torii gate, and the shrine office remain. Although the elevation of the mountain is less than 100 meters, the broad view allows for a glimpse of the streets of Tongxiao. The long pathway leading up is rather charming. Tongxiao Shrine is situated on Hushan in Tongxiao, and over the years has weathered many storms, leaving its architectural appearance nearly in ruins. Recently, with the restoration completed by the Miaoli County Cultural Affairs Bureau, the shrine's appearance is almost exactly as it was when intact, with no loss but rather enhancements. Moreover, on June 19, 2005, the township office held a completion ceremony for the event "Historical Buildings of Miaoli County - The New Appearance of Tongxiao Shrine," celebrating with a series of lively activities.
