Mudan Reservoir Introduction
Completed and inaugurated in 1995, the Mudan Reservoir is located in the Mudan Township of Pingtung County. The objective of its construction was to address the water supply needs for domestic and agricultural use in the Hengchun area, leading to the decision to build a dam in the Shihchung Creek Valley to store water. This reservoir collects water from the Ruifeng Creek and Mudan Creek, with a catchment area of approximately 69 square kilometers and a total storage capacity of up to 30 million cubic meters. It is the largest reservoir in the Pingtung area and the southernmost reservoir in Taiwan. The daily water supply of the Mudan Reservoir is 100,000 tons, with an annual supply of 37 million tons, primarily serving general water needs for six townships: Fangshan, Checheng, Hengchun, Fangliao, Manzhou, and Mudan, as well as public water use in the vicinity of Kenting National Park until 2021. In addition to meeting general water needs, the Mudan Reservoir has gradually developed into one of the tourist attractions in Mudan Township due to its beautiful scenery. Before reaching the Mudan Reservoir, visitors pass through the Mudan Bridge, notable for its striking red semicircular arch and intricately carved indigenous motifs along both sides of the bridge, creating a welcoming atmosphere. Upon entering the Mudan Reservoir area, to the left of the access road is a small "Inauguration Monument Park," quietly positioned next to the reservoir channel. During dry seasons, this channel resembles a gentle stream, with the red bridge just seen earlier on the left. As one walks further into the park, the greenery becomes denser, offering the feeling of being in a small forest. Since the Mudan Reservoir is built in the Shihchung Creek Valley, surrounded by rolling hills and green forests, those wishing to take in the lake and mountain scenery must follow the hiking trail to the top of the dam. Along the way, grand structures such as the dam, spillway, and outlet are visible, evoking the powerful image of rushing water during spill events. At the summit of the reservoir, there is a pristine, mirror-like catchment area that sparkles under the sunlight, resembling a green gem embraced by mountains, complemented by the blue sky and verdant hills. The views at Mudan Reservoir are sure to leave a lasting impression.
