Mudan Reservoir Introduction

The Mudan Reservoir, officially completed and opened in 1995, is located in Mudan Township, Pingtung County. It was constructed to address the domestic and agricultural water needs of the Hengchun area, with a dam built in the Sihong Creek Valley to store water. The reservoir mainly collects water from the Ruijian Creek and Mudan Creek, with a catchment area of approximately 69 square kilometers and a total storage capacity of up to 30 million cubic meters. It is the largest reservoir in Pingtung and the southernmost reservoir in Taiwan. The daily water supply from Mudan Reservoir is 100,000 tons, with an annual supply of 37 million tons. It currently mainly supplies general water for six townships: Fangshan, Checheng, Hengchun, Fangliao, Manzhou, and Mudan, as well as public water in the Kenting National Park area until 2021. In addition to general water needs, Mudan Reservoir, with its picturesque scenery, has gradually developed into one of the sightseeing spots in Mudan Township. Before reaching Mudan Reservoir, visitors first cross the Mudan Bridge, characterized by its striking red semi-circular arch, and notably, the sides of the bridge are adorned with many indigenous totems, creating an impression of hospitality. Upon entering Mudan Reservoir, there is a small "Inauguration Commemoration Park" on the left side of the access road, standing quietly beside the reservoir channel. During the dry season, it resembles a gentle stream. To the left is the red arch bridge, and as you walk further into the park, the greenery increases, offering a sense of being in a small forest. Since Mudan Reservoir is built in the Sihong Creek Valley, surrounded by rolling hills and green forests, to enjoy the scenic views of the lake and mountains, one must follow the hiking trail directly to the dam top. Along the way, one can see the dam, spillway, and outlet, magnificent constructions that make it easy to imagine the powerful rush of water during discharge. At the top of the reservoir, there is a clear, mirror-like catchment area sparkling under the sunlight, resembling a green gem surrounded by mountains, perfectly complimented by the blue sky and green hills. The views from Mudan Reservoir are surely rewarding.
