Mudan Reservoir Introduction

The Mudan Reservoir, officially completed and opened in 1995, is located in the Mudan Township of Pingtung County. It was constructed to meet the water supply needs for both domestic and agricultural use in the Hengchun area. The reservoir is built in the Shichong Creek Valley, primarily collecting water from the Ruying Stream and the Mudan Stream, with a catchment area of approximately 69 square kilometers and a total storage capacity of up to 30 million cubic meters. It is the largest reservoir in Pingtung County and the southernmost reservoir in Taiwan. The daily water supply from the Mudan Reservoir is 100,000 tons, with an annual supply of 37 million tons, mainly serving the general water needs of six townships: Fangshan, Checheng, Hengchun, Fangliao, Manzhou, and Mudan, as well as public water in the Kenting National Park area until 2021. In addition to meeting general water needs, the Mudan Reservoir has also gradually developed into a tourist attraction due to its picturesque scenery. Before reaching the Mudan Reservoir, visitors will cross the Mudan Bridge, notable for its striking red semi-circular arch and the many indigenous totems carved on both sides of the bridge, creating an inviting atmosphere. Upon entering the Mudan Reservoir area, on the left side of the road is a small "Inauguration Commemorative Monument Park," quietly standing beside the reservoir channel, which resembles a gentle stream during the dry season. To the left is the previously mentioned red arch bridge, and as one walks further into the park, the increasing greenery creates the feeling of being in a small forest. Nestled in the Shichong Creek Valley surrounded by rolling hills and green trees, those wanting to glimpse the lake and mountain scenery need to follow the hiking trail up to the dam's peak. Along the way, one can see the magnificent structures of the dam, spillway, and outlet, and it’s easy to imagine the tremendous flow during flood discharge, reminiscent of a stampede. At the top of the reservoir, the clear, mirror-like catchment area reflects sunlight, sparkling like a green gem surrounded by mountains, perfectly complemented by the blue sky, making the scenery of Mudan Reservoir truly breathtaking.
