Mudan Reservoir Introduction

The Mudan Reservoir, officially completed and opened in 1995, is located in Mudan Township, Pingtung County. Its construction aimed to address the drinking and agricultural water needs of the Hengchun area, leading to the decision to build a dam in the Shijung River Valley to store water. The reservoir primarily collects water from the Ruying River and the Mudan River, with a catchment area of approximately 69 square kilometers and a total storage capacity of up to 30 million cubic meters. It is the largest reservoir in Pingtung and the southernmost reservoir in Taiwan. The daily water supply of Mudan Reservoir is 100,000 tons, with an annual water supply of 37 million tons, primarily serving the general water needs of six townships: Fangshan, Checheng, Hengchun, Fangliao, Manjhou, and Mudan, as well as public water for the Kenting National Park area until 2021. In addition to meeting general water needs, Mudan Reservoir has also developed into one of the tourist attractions in Mudan Township due to its beautiful scenery. Before reaching Mudan Reservoir, visitors will first pass over Mudan Bridge, characterized by its striking red semicircular arch, with numerous indigenous totems intricately carved on both sides of the bridge, creating an impression of welcoming guests. Upon entering Mudan Reservoir, on the left side of the road is a small "Inauguration Commemorative Monument Park," quietly standing beside the reservoir channel. During dry seasons, this channel resembles a gentle stream, with the red arch bridge just to the left. As visitors walk into the park, the greenery increases, creating a feeling of being in a small forest. Since Mudan Reservoir is built in the Shijung River Valley, surrounded by continuous hills and green trees, those wishing to enjoy the stunning lake and mountain scenery must follow the hiking trail straight to the dam top. Along the way, they will see magnificent structures like the dam, spillway, and outlet, making it easy to imagine the powerful flow during flood discharge. At the reservoir's peak, there is a basin of clear, mirror-like water that sparkles under the sun, resembling a green gem surrounded by mountains, complemented by the blue sky and green hills. The scenery at Mudan Reservoir is truly breathtaking and will not disappoint.
