Mudan Reservoir Introduction
Completed in 1995, the Mudan Reservoir is located in Mudan Township, Pingtung County. It was constructed to meet the domestic and agricultural water needs of the Hengchun area, selecting the Si Chong Creek valley as the site for the dam to store water. The reservoir mainly collects water from the Ruying Creek and Mudan Creek, with a catchment area of approximately 69 square kilometers and a total storage capacity of 30 million cubic meters. It is the largest reservoir in the Pingtung area and the southernmost reservoir in Taiwan. The Mudan Reservoir supplies 100,000 tons of water daily, with an annual supply of 37 million tons, primarily serving general water needs for six townships: Fangshan, Checheng, Hengchun, Fangliao, Manjhou, and Mudan, as well as public water needs in the Kenting National Park area until 2021. In addition to meeting general water needs, the Mudan Reservoir has gradually developed into a tourist attraction due to its picturesque scenery. Before reaching the reservoir, visitors pass over the Mudan Bridge, characterized by its striking red semi-circular arch, adorned with numerous indigenous totems carved along its sides, resembling a welcoming committee. Upon entering the Mudan Reservoir, on the left side of the road, there is a small "Inauguration Commemorative Monument Park," standing quietly by the reservoir channel. During the dry season, it resembles a gentle stream, and adjacent to it is the previously mentioned red arch bridge. As visitors walk into the park, they are surrounded by increasing greenery, creating the feeling of being in a small forest. Given that the Mudan Reservoir is built amidst the continuous hills and green trees surrounding the Si Chong Creek valley, those who wish to enjoy the lake and mountain scenery must follow the mountain trail to the dam's top. Along the way, they can see magnificent structures such as the dam, spillway, and outlet, and it's easy to imagine the force of the rushing water during flood releases. At the reservoir's summit, there is a clear, mirror-like catchment area on the dam top, shimmering in the sunlight like a green gemstone embraced by the surrounding mountains, perfectly complemented by the blue sky and green hills. The scenery at Mudan Reservoir is sure to impress.
