Mudan Reservoir Introduction
Completed and put into operation in 1995, Mudan Reservoir is located in Mudan Township, Pingtung County. The construction aims to address the water needs for people's livelihoods and agriculture in the Hengchun area, which is why the dam was built in the Sizong Creek valley to store water, primarily collecting sources from the Ruying Stream and Mudan Creek. The catchment area is about 69 square kilometers, with a total storage capacity of up to 30 million cubic meters, making it the largest reservoir in the Pingtung area and also the southernmost reservoir in Taiwan. Mudan Reservoir supplies 100,000 tons of water daily, with an annual water supply of 37 million tons. It currently mainly provides general water supply for six townships: Fangshan, Checheng, Hengchun, Fangliao, Manzhou, and Mudan, as well as public water supply in the Kenting National Park area until 2021. Besides meeting general water needs, Mudan Reservoir has also gradually developed into one of Mudan Township's tourist attractions due to its picturesque scenery. Before reaching Mudan Reservoir, visitors will first pass through Mudan Bridge, where the red semi-circular arch is the most striking feature of the bridge. Interestingly, many indigenous motifs are carved on both sides of the bridge, creating the appearance of welcoming guests in line. Upon entering Mudan Reservoir, on the left side of the roadway, there is a small "Inauguration Memorial Park" standing quietly by the rail, below which is the reservoir channel. During the dry season, it resembles a gently flowing stream, with the red arch bridge just greeted on the left. As one walks further into the park, the number of green trees increases, creating a sense of being in a small forest. Since Mudan Reservoir is built in the Sizong Creek valley, surrounded by continuous hills and green trees, to appreciate the beautiful lake and mountain scenery, one must follow the hiking trail directly to the dam top. Along the way, one can see grand structures such as the dam, spillway, and outlet, making it easy to imagine the immense force of water flowing during flood discharge. At the top of the reservoir, there is a clear and mirror-like catchment area, occasionally shimmering with sunlight, resembling a green gem enveloped by mountains, complemented by the blue sky and green hills. The view from Mudan Reservoir is absolutely breathtaking.
