Jiqi Fishing Port Introduction
The area from Sanxian Elementary School north to the coast near Sanxiantai is called Jiqi (giaw, gihaw). In the early days, a few families from Green Island and Hengchun lived here, and you can still see traditional Green Island stone walls. The bay on the south side of Sanxiantai was used as an entrance and exit for bamboo rafts before the construction of Xinguang Fishing Port, hence the name "Jiqi," which may be in the Amis language, meaning "a place with a bay." After the war, due to the 8th neighborhood being renamed "Sanxian," "Jiqi" mainly refers to the area of the 9th neighborhood at the bay port. The surrounding sea area has calm wave conditions most of the time, making it unsuitable for surfing but ideal for snorkeling and deep diving. However, before and after typhoons in summer and autumn, and when the northeastern monsoon strengthens in winter, beautiful left-breaking waves can occasionally appear here, which are rare in Taiwan. They are more challenging, and due to the strengthening of the northeastern monsoon, this location experiences offshore winds and swirling waves, offering good wave shapes suitable for advanced surfers to perform high-difficulty maneuvers.
