Jiqi Fishing Port Introduction
The coastline from Sanxian Elementary School north to the area near Sanxiantai is called Jihua (giaw, gihaw). In the early days, several households from Green Island and Hengchun lived here, and traditional Green Island stone fences can still be seen. The bay south of Sanxiantai was the entry and exit point for bamboo rafts before the construction of Xinguang Fishing Port, hence the name "Jihua," which may derive from the Amis language, meaning "place of the bay" or "a place with a bay." After the war, due to the 8th neighborhood being renamed "Sanxian," "Jihua" now mainly refers to the area around the port of the 9th neighborhood. The surrounding sea area has calm waves most of the time, making it unsuitable for surfing but ideal for snorkeling and deep diving. However, before and after typhoons in the summer and autumn, as well as when the northeast monsoon strengthens in winter, there are rare beautiful left-breaking waves appearing here, which are more challenging. And due to the enhancement of the northeast monsoon, this location has onshore winds and swirling waves, with good wave shapes suitable for advanced surfers to perform high-difficulty maneuvers.
