Jiqi Fishing Port Introduction
The coastal area from Sanxian Elementary School north to the vicinity of Sanxiantai is called Giah (giaw, gihaw). In the past, a few households from Green Island and Hengchun lived here, and traditional Green Island Gulao stone walls can still be seen. The bay on the south side of Sanxiantai was once a place where bamboo rafts entered and exited before the construction of Xinguang Fishing Port, hence the name "Giah," which may be from the Amis language, meaning "a place at the bay or a place with a bay." After the war, due to the 8th neighborhood being renamed "Sanxian," the term "Giah" now primarily refers to the area around the 9th neighborhood at the bay port. The surrounding sea area usually has calm waves, making it unsuitable for surfing, but ideal for snorkeling and deep diving. However, during the periods before and after typhoons in summer and autumn, and when the northeast monsoon strengthens in winter, this area can exhibit exceptionally beautiful left-hand waves, which are rare in Taiwan. These waves can be challenging, and due to the strengthening of the northeast monsoon, this location experiences onshore winds and swells, producing good wave shapes suitable for advanced surfers to perform difficult maneuvers.
