Jiqi Fishing Port Introduction
The coastal area from Sanxian Elementary School to the vicinity of Sanxiantai is called Jiaqi (giaw, gihaw). In the early days, a few households from Green Island and Hengchun lived here, and traditional Green Island stone walls can still be seen. The bay south of Sanxiantai was originally a place for bamboo rafts to enter and exit before the construction of Xinguang Fishing Port, hence the name "Jiaqi," which may come from the Amis language, meaning "a place by the bay." After the war, due to the eighth neighborhood also being named "Sanxian," the term "Jiaqi" now mainly refers to the area around the ninth neighborhood at the bay port. The surrounding sea area has stable wave conditions most of the time, making it unsuitable for surfing but perfect for snorkeling and deep diving. However, before and after typhoons in summer and autumn and during the winter northeast monsoon when it strengthens, beautiful left-running waves, which are rare in Taiwan, can appear here. This location experiences land winds and swells due to the enhanced northeast monsoon, resulting in good wave patterns suitable for advanced surfers to perform high-difficulty maneuvers.
