This is the philosophy of the owner of the White Shrimp King along Taiwan Route 11, which he imparts to his children and adheres to when raising white shrimp. Taking advantage of the unique marine environment of Chenggong Township in Taitung, he uses pure seawater to farm white shrimp, avoiding extracting groundwater that would deplete aquifer resources. Although white shrimp raised in pure seawater grow more slowly than those in freshwater, the shrimp that mature in a marine environment have a firmer and more resilient texture, without the mealy and insubstantial feel. After more than a decade of experience and improvements, the farm employs a hard-bottom pond design, providing a cleaner growing environment compared to the mixed farming methods in sandy-bottom ponds on the western coast. Furthermore, the owner continuously monitors the changing water quality in the ponds day and night, which is a secret known to shrimp farmers. The key lies in sunlight and seawater, using these two elements to regulate the microorganisms in the ponds, allowing for healthy white shrimp to be provided to consumers without reliance on any antibiotics or chemicals. Because of this, each batch of healthy, well-grown white shrimp has gone through a natural selection process, enduring a long growth period and the unavoidable low yield rate of natural aquaculture.
