Hsinchu Moat Hydrophilic Park Introduction

Hsinchu City Moat is a precious historical site in Taiwan, being the only remaining city gate and moat site preserved. Centered around the East Gate, the moat extends 840 meters north to Linsen Road and south to Shijie Street, with a width of about 56 meters. Planning and design began in 2000, with grass and flowing water allowing citizens to enjoy the pleasure of being near water. The trees, greenery along the banks, and two small amphitheaters provide spaces for outdoor performances. Below the East Gate Plaza lies the remains of the ancient moat, which has been transformed into an underground gallery displaying old photographs of Hsinchu, adding poetic charm to the ancient city gate. The "Hsinchu City Moat Reconstruction Project" in 2016 brought people closer to the riverside. The riverside park towards Culture Street features gradual steps and accessible facilities, transforming the previously rigid and secluded area, allowing people with mobility issues or parents with strollers to stroll along the riverbank, experiencing the blue-green space. The original fountain area has been converted into a circular stage across the river. Hsinchu Moat Riverside Park is a popular leisure destination for Hsinchu citizens on weekends. Although the moat has lost its defensive function, it plays a significant role in tourism value and cultural history.
