Hsinchu Moat Waterfront Park Introduction

Hsinchu City’s City Moat is a precious historical site as it preserves the only remaining city gate and the original site of the city moat in Taiwan. Centered around East Gate, the moat stretches 840 meters north to Linsen Road and south to Shijie Street, with an average width of about 56 meters. Planning and design began in 2000, with grassy areas and flowing water allowing citizens to enjoy water-related activities. Along the banks, trees, plantings, and two small amphitheaters provide spaces for outdoor performances. Beneath the East Gate Square lies the ancient moat ruins, which have been transformed into an underground art gallery displaying old photographs of Hsinchu, adding literary charm to the ancient city gate. The 2016 "Hsinchu City Moat Rehabilitation Project" brought people closer to the riverside, with a waterside park located towards Cultural Street from the East Gate. The park features gradual steps and accessible facilities, changing the previously stiff and isolated appearance, allowing friends with mobility issues or parents with strollers to stroll along the riverside and experience the blue-green belt. The former fountain area has been transformed into a circular stage spanning the river. Hsinchu’s City Moat Waterside Park is a popular leisure destination for Hsinchu citizens on weekends. Although the moat has lost its defensive function, it plays a significant role in terms of tourism value and historical culture.
