Hsinchu Moat Riverside Park Introduction
Hsinchu City's City Moat is a precious historical site in Taiwan, preserving the only existing city gate and the remnants of the moat. Centered around the East Gate, the moat stretches 840 meters north to Linsen Road and south to Shijie Street, with a width of approximately 56 meters. Planning and design began in 2000, with lawns and flowing water enhancing citizens' enjoyment of the riverside experience. The trees and plantings along the banks, along with two small amphitheaters, provide spaces for outdoor performances. Below the East Gate Square lies the remnants of the ancient city moat, which is now an underground art gallery displaying old photographs of Hsinchu, adding a poetic charm to the ancient gate. The "Hsinchu City Moat Renewal Project" in 2016 made the riverside more accessible to people. The riverside park towards Cultural Street features gradual stairs and barrier-free facilities, transforming the previously stiff and remote area. Friends with mobility constraints or parents pushing strollers can now stroll along the riverbank, experiencing the blues and greens of the riverside, while the former fountain area was redesigned into a circular stage spanning the river. The Hsinchu City Moat Riverside Park has become a popular leisure destination for Hsinchu citizens on weekends. Although the moat has lost its defensive function, it plays a significant role in terms of tourism value and historical culture.
