Hsinchu Moat Waterfront Park Introduction

Hsinchu City Fortification is a precious historical feature in Taiwan, preserving the only remaining city gate and the original site of the moat. Centered around East Gate, the moat extends north to Linsen Road and south to Shijie Street, measuring 840 meters long and approximately 56 meters wide. Planning and design began in 2000, with grass and flowing water allowing citizens to better enjoy the experience of being near water. Combined with trees, plantings along the banks, and two small amphitheaters offering outdoor performances for the public. Beneath the East Gate Square lies the remnants of the ancient moat, which has now been transformed into an underground art gallery displaying old photographs of Hsinchu, adding poetic charm to the ancient city gate. The 2016 "Hsinchu City Moat Reconstruction Project" brought people closer to the riverside, featuring a water park in the direction from East Gate to Cultural Street, with gradual steps and accessible facilities along the riverbank. This transformation has replaced the previously rigid and secluded appearance, allowing those with mobility challenges or parents pushing strollers to stroll along the riverside and enjoy the blue-green space with close ones. The original fountain area has been turned into a circular stage spanning the river. Hsinchu Moat Water Park has become a popular leisure spot for citizens on weekends. Although the moat has lost its defensive function, it plays a significantly important role in terms of tourism value and historical culture.
