Hsinchu Moat Waterfront Park Introduction

Hsinchu City’s Huh Cheng is a precious historical site in Taiwan, preserving the last remaining city gate and the original site of the city moat. Centered around East Gate, the moat extends 840 meters north to Linsen Road and south to Shijie Street, with a width of about 56 meters. Planning and design began in 2000, incorporating grass and flowing water to enhance citizens' enjoyment of water activities. Along the banks, trees and plantings line the area, and two small amphitheaters provide outdoor performance spaces for the public. Below the East Gate Plaza lies the ancient city moat remnants, which are now an underground art gallery showcasing old photographs of Hsinchu, adding cultural and poetic flair to the ancient city gate. The "Hsinchu City Moat Reconstruction Project" in 2016 brought the riverbank closer to the people, with a waterfront park towards Cultural Street that features gradual steps and barrier-free facilities, transforming the previously stark and isolated area. Friends with mobility issues or parents pushing strollers can stroll along the riverbank, experiencing the leisurely blue-green space. The original fountain area has been transformed into a circular stage that spans the river. Hsinchu’s Moat Waterfront Park has become a popular spot for citizens' leisure on weekends. Although the moat has lost its defensive function, it plays a significant role in terms of tourism value and historical and cultural importance.
