Lion's Head Mountain Trail Introduction
Xindian has two Lion Head Mountains. One is located at the mountain area at the head of the Huangkui Stream at the border of Xindian and Sanxia, called Lion's Head Mountain, and is a first-class triangulation point to the south of Greater Taipei. The other Lion Head Mountain is located beside Bitan and is referred to as Little Lion Mountain. Little Lion Mountain, along with Shilin's Zhishan Rock, is one of the few mountainous areas protected since the Qing Dynasty and during the Japanese occupation, which means tall trees can be seen everywhere, maintaining the appearance and tranquility of a primeval forest. Nearby, the towering Banyan tree with its large prop roots is stunning to behold; the epiphytic and climbing plants growing on the Filipino banyan resemble a work of art by nature. Along the trail on the left side of Meihua Lion Pavilion, one can observe unique sights of tree roots embracing rocks. Lion Head Mountain is situated between the Bitan Fault and the Xindian Fault, within the Nangang Formation, where the strata are steeply inclined or overturned. Walking along the Lion Head Mountain trail, one can observe thick sandstone and massive boulders covered in moss along the way. Lion Head Mountain is formed by a series of five peaks, with three of them connected, and each peak has a pavilion set up for tourists to rest.
