Zhongtun Wind Power Park Introduction
Zhongtun, an ancient name known as Zhongdun, is situated between Penghu Main Island and Baisha Island, forming an earth mound that inspired its name. After the retrocession, it was phonetically renamed Zhongtun. Subsequently, the Yong'an Bridge and the Zhongzheng Bridge were built, connecting Baisha to the north and Penghu Main Island to the south. The construction of the cross-sea bridge later integrated the towns of Magong, Huksi, Baisha, and Xiyu. The wind power plant is located in Zhongtun Village, Baisha Township, Penghu County, and officially began commercial operation in October 2001. The wind power plant is situated at the Zhongtun second nursery and has been planned as a wind turbine park, becoming a famous tourist attraction and a new landmark in Baisha Township, Penghu County. This wind power plant is the second in Taiwan and the third generation of wind turbines in Penghu, with a total of eight units installed in Phase II, each capable of producing 600 kilowatts, controlled by a computer for variable speed functions. As wind conditions change, the angle of the blades can also adjust, allowing the rotational speed to be modified according to power generation needs to maintain stable output. The principle of wind power generation entails using wind to drive the rotor blades, which through a gearbox enhances the rotational speed to generate electricity. The Zhongtun units can start generating power at wind speeds of approximately 2.5 meters per second. The site for the wind power plant must meet conditions such as long wind duration, average high wind speeds, stable wind conditions, and being unobstructed by obstacles. Coupled with a suitable geographical environment, these factors help reduce investment costs and increase power output. The eight massive turbine generators have become the most eye-catching landmarks in Penghu. They have appeared in the music videos of artists like Hsu Hui-hsin’s "Put Love on Hold," Jiang Mei-qi’s "Dear, Why Aren't You by My Side," Liu Ye’s "Love Has No Borders," and Zhan Ya-wen’s "Lying Too Much," as well as numerous advertisements. The white wind turbines are not only popular photography spots but also one of the romantic landmarks in Penghu.
