Tamsui Old Street Introduction
Walking out of Tamsui MRT Station and turning right onto Zhongzheng Road, along with the extended Jhongjian Street and Qingshui Street, you will find the famous Tamsui Old Street. "Tamsui Old Street" is not only a well-known popular attraction in Taiwan, but it also attracts many foreigners. The streets are lined with bustling shops, featuring traditional snack shops, grocery stores, as well as trendy clothing and toy shops. A must-try delicacy in Tamsui is A-Gei, which derives its name from the Japanese pronunciation of fried tofu. It is made by hollowing out fried tofu, filling it with stir-fried vermicelli, soaking it in marinade, sealing it with fish paste, and then steaming it, finally drizzled with sweet chili sauce or the shop's secret sauce. Specialty snacks like fish balls, A-Po's iron eggs, and fish floss can also be found, along with many historical sites to visit, making it a place that never gets boring. Tamsui Old Street is divided into inner and outer sides; the outer side features the golden waterfront path along the Tamsui River, while the inner side is a traditional old street abundant with lively shops. In the evening, you can enjoy a beautiful sunset over the sea from the golden waterfront path. Jhongjian Street, located on the hillside, developed earlier, thus retaining many wooden and brick old houses on either side. At the end of the street, you can admire the view of the Tamsui River estuary from up high. Later, due to commercial development, another street parallel to Jhongjian Street formed, mainly consisting of rice shops and rice milling businesses, hence it was called "Rice Street" (now the northern section of Qingshui Street). It wasn't until the construction of the Qingshui Temple that Rice Street was renamed Qingshui Street. Continuing along Zhongzheng Road Old Street, you can see the statue park of Dr. Mackay, who has greatly influenced Tamsui, along with historical sites such as Qingshui Temple, Fuyou Temple, Hu-Wei Mackay Clinic, and Tamsui Church. Besides exploring the beauty of the old street, the unique shops within are also great places for shopping and enjoying delicious food. (Source: New Taipei City Tourism Network)
