Wufenpu Garment District Introduction
The center of ready-made clothing wholesale in Taipei is undoubtedly "Wufenpu." It is home to hundreds of wholesale shops clustered around Songshan Railway Station. The name "Wufenpu" originates from the Qing Dynasty, when it was the area inhabited by the Pingpu indigenous people. Later, five families - He, Zhou, Shen, Du, and Li - purchased this land from the Pingpu people and developed it, naming the village Wufenpu. The economic development of Taiwan over the past half-century, from poverty to endless workdays leading to prosperity, parallels the developmental history of Wufenpu. People from Central and Southern Taiwan, seeking livelihoods, gather in Wufenpu to process leftover or unsold fabrics from exported garments into simple products like underwear, children's clothing, or rough work attire, which are sold at roadside stalls and retail stores, gradually building Wufenpu's reputation. Today, hundreds of garment businesses are gathered here, with supplies sourced from all over Taiwan and even imported from regions like Hong Kong, Thailand, South Korea, and Singapore. The affordable clothing attracts small vendors for wholesale and retail, while the variety of styles and trendy cuts also draws many young shoppers seeking to create eye-catching fashion statements. When the desire to shop arises, but budget constraints exist or one wants to avoid spending too much, Wufenpu is the perfect place to go. It's worth mentioning that haggling is a common shopping phenomenon here, adding an extra thrill to the buying experience as customers negotiate prices with the vendors!
