Wufenpu Garment District Introduction
Where is the center of wholesale clothing in Taipei? Most people's first reaction would be "Wufenpu." Hundreds of wholesale shops are clustered around the Songshan Railway Station. The name originates from the Qing Dynasty, when Wufenpu was the territory of the Pingpu people, an indigenous group in Taiwan. Later, five families—He, Zhou, Shen, Du, and Li—purchased this land from the Pingpu people to cultivate it, naming the area Wufenpu. Over the last half century, Taiwan's economic development has transformed from poverty to prosperity, mirroring the history of Wufenpu's growth. People from central and southern Taiwan flocked to Wufenpu in search of work, processing leftover fabrics or unsold materials from exports into underwear, children's clothing, or crude work uniforms for roadside stalls and retail shops, gradually establishing Wufenpu's reputation. Today, hundreds of garment manufacturers gather here, with supplies sourced from all over Taiwan and even imported from places like Hong Kong, Thailand, Korea, and Singapore. The affordable clothing attracts small traders for wholesale and retail, with a wide variety of styles and trendy cuts drawing many young shoppers who mix and match to create eye-catching fashion styles. When the desire to shop arises but the budget is tight, Wufenpu is the best place to go. It is also worth mentioning that haggling is a common shopping phenomenon here, adding to the thrill of the purchase through negotiations with the shop owners!
