Taipei Ark Introduction

The coexistence of past and present redefines spatial patterns at "N24 Taipei Ark," which was originally part of the Taiwan Power Company's warehouse complex, built during the Japanese colonial period as the Matsuyama factory of the Taiwan Electric Power Company. After the war, it served as the Matsuyama repair facility for Taiwan Power. Initially, the building functioned as a warehouse, lacking good lighting and ventilation in its design. Understanding the functional requirements and inherent characteristics of the building, the design team aligned with the East District Gateway Project to transform it into an office space. The renovation method involved detaching the warehouse volume and extending it outward to allow more natural light to enter the interior; the high ceiling in the top floor restructured the office space, enabling a more open vertical relationship. Introducing new functions in response to contemporary trends, the design team applied the concept of community flow to break the limitations of the spatial layout, planning flexible spaces for office work, discussions, and relaxation, allowing users to maintain freedom of interaction while working. Furthermore, considering that the building is a historical monument, the design team preserved the exterior materials and overall wear from use, along with reinforcing the structure with steel frames and seismic walls. This respectful restoration method, which retains certain original aspects, allows us to view the walls’ patina and the traces left by time from various angles. On the second floor, entering the "Blockchain Incubation Center" office space, the design team chose to use seismic walls as a point structural element to address issues arising from the building's age while also preserving the beauty of the existing reinforced concrete structure. Following the light and the spiraling staircase in the atrium, one reaches the rooftop area. The sloped volume of the atrium on the rooftop allows enough light to enter through side-opening windows, and the design’s volumetric shape echoes the "ark" imagery of "N24 Taipei Ark," becoming a representative icon for the entrance of the park. Extending the context, the community space is redefined. The design team observed contemporary community connections and, with the Blockchain Center serving as an office space for "N24 Taipei Ark," expanded the definition of "community" into "social" interactions. This reflects future patterns of how people connect, both physically and relationally, representing one of the trends in development. Integrating core concepts with design techniques, the space's renovation creates a "human-centered" architectural environment, showcasing the space's charm.
