War and Peace Memorial Park Theme Pavilion Introduction
The Theme Pavilion of the War and Peace Memorial Park is located within the War and Peace Memorial Park, a must-visit spot for military enthusiasts filled with emotional memories from nearly half a century. On sunny days, visitors can enjoy a distant view of the mainland coastline, contrasting the tense atmosphere of wartime with the theme of "war and peace." Officially inaugurated in 2010, the Matsu Management Office invited the "real heroes of the North Sea" who excavated tunnels in Matsu to revisit the site during the opening, with the display of the "War Memories—Old Films of Matsu." During the martial law period, the public was unable to own cameras, and only the military could take photographs and videos. Thus, the images from this time are incredibly precious, allowing viewers to revisit the true daily lives of military personnel and civilians while uncovering the mysterious veil of wartime governance. The Theme Pavilion features the theme of "Emotion and Memory," divided into various exhibition areas: the origins, significant military developments, a military supplies display, and military-civilian ecological culture. Through texts and images, the pavilion vividly reproduces the nearly half-century of military rule in Matsu, demonstrating the shared experiences of the military and civilian population and allowing visitors to imagine the hardships faced by residents of the war zone. To get to the Theme Pavilion of the War and Peace Memorial Park, follow the Tanghou Road beach next to Beigan Airport towards the direction of Houao Village. Follow the signs up the mountain; just before entering the mountain road of the park, there is a traffic light that guides local residents along this road. For safety reasons, be sure to wait for the green light before proceeding to avoid any vehicles coming down, as this is the only traffic light in Beigan.
