The Northern Frontier of the Nation Introduction
Standing at the northernmost point of Taiwan, many people know that the southernmost boundary of the Republic of China reaches the Spratly Islands' Zengmu Reef, but few realize that the northernmost point is located in Dongyin, Matsu. Heading northwest from the Qing Shui Ao control post along the road, climbing over the hill to the end, you'll arrive at the northern frontier of the Republic of China. However, the true northernmost tip of Taiwan is actually a small reef located offshore from Luohanping Cape! This reef, also known as "Beigu Reef," is situated about 600 meters above the back bay of Xiyin and is currently uninhabited, appearing and disappearing with the rise and fall of the tides. To commemorate the northern frontier of the country and allow visitors to catch a glimpse, the Matsu National Scenic Area Administration has built a viewing platform at the back bay cape and erected a stone tablet inscribed with "National Northern Frontier," providing visitors with an opportunity to take photos and leave proof that they have visited the "north of the border," even if they have not seen Beigu Reef.
