Dazhongye Temple (Dazhangshu) Introduction

The large camphor tree is over 700 years old and stands 30 meters tall, located in front of the bustling Dazhong Temple in Jiji. During the early years of the Guangxu period, devotees renovated the original small shrine into a temple, and the deity Dazhong Ye was enshrined in a statue for worship. Due to its long history, the local people revere the old camphor tree as a deity and refer to it as "Camphor Tree God," believing it to be particularly effective in finding lost items. The 23rd day of the 8th lunar month is celebrated as the anniversary of the Camphor Tree God, which coincides with Jiji’s annual grand worship day. On this day, countless tourists and locals come to pay their respects, and the area in front of the temple becomes packed with street vendors, throngs of people, and performance stages, making it the most important day in the small town of Jiji.
