Yin Yin Grass Jelly / You Tou Egg Cake / Pin Hua Tofu Pudding Introduction

Chiayi Fairy Grass Uncle Legend. The story of the taste of bagged grass jelly, "Uncle Yi's Grass Jelly waiting for customers even after closing," is mostly pieced together from local anecdotes. What does the young successor have to say? Eric recalls that when selling egg cakes at Yi, the grass jelly master had already retired for ten years. Initially, he was displeased with someone taking over his territory. Eric called him “Grandpa.” The grass jelly master was very old; after retirement, he walked from home to Yi every day, seemingly "waiting for customers," which actually reflected the loneliness of old age. Here, he could chat with people and be accompanied by noisy young folks. Over time, one day Grandpa asked Eric, "Do you want to learn how to make grass jelly?" This allowed the story to continue. Grandpa insisted on using relatively troublesome sweet potato starch to coagulate the grass jelly. The young man practiced hard for a long time before getting his approval to start selling. When opening a store named "Yi Grass Jelly," Grandpa was still alive and would occasionally come by for "quality control," reassuring old customers that this shop was taught by him personally. The friendship between the young man and Grandpa became a cherished tale. A few years ago, the grass jelly master passed away, and Eric regretted not having preserved his grandpa's voice and smile, so he asked a friend to create a portrait in memory. He also revived the authentic bagged grass jelly to pay tribute! (Image source: Chiayi City Government Tourism and News Office | Photography: Margaret)
