Donghe Bridge Scenic Area Introduction
The Donghe Bridge Scenic Area is located near the estuary of the Mawu Stream, with the Donghe settlement to the south of the bridge and the starting point of Dongfu Highway towards Fuli Township, Hualien County, to the north. The old Donghe Bridge was constructed in the 19th year of the Republic of China and designed by Japanese engineers. To adapt to the terrain and preserve the giant rock formations in the stream, it features a half-arch structure on one side and a water-frame type bridge pier on the other, creating an interesting contrast. This unique pier design is extremely rare and is considered a bridge that harmonizes perfectly with the natural environment. It has also been recognized by the Council for Cultural Affairs as one of Taiwan's historical architecture landmarks. The new Donghe Bridge was built in the 81st year of the Republic of China, during the widening of the coastal highway. A new red steel arch bridge was constructed downstream of the old Donghe Bridge. The design of the new Donghe Bridge is simple yet striking, with a wooden pedestrian walkway on the bridge deck that allows for views of the Pacific Ocean.
