Donghe Bridge Scenic Area Introduction
Donghe Bridge Scenic Area is located near the estuary of the Mawu River. To the south of the bridge lies the Donghe settlement, while to the north is the starting point of Dongfu Road leading to Fuli Township in Hualien County. The old Donghe Bridge was built in 1930 and designed by a Japanese engineer. To adapt to the terrain and preserve the landscape of boulders in the river, one half of the bridge was designed as an arch structure, while the other half features water-frame type piers, creating an interesting contrast. This unique pier design is quite rare and is considered a bridge that best integrates with the natural environment. It has even been designated as one of Taiwan's historical architecture treasures by the Council for Cultural Affairs. The new Donghe Bridge was built in 1992 during the expansion of the Coastal Highway, creating a new red steel arch bridge downstream of the old Donghe Bridge. The design of the new Donghe Bridge is simple yet striking, featuring a wooden pedestrian walkway on its surface, allowing pedestrians to overlook the Pacific Ocean while walking on it.
