Donghe Bridge Scenic Area Introduction
Donghe Bridge Scenic Area is located near the mouth of the Mawu River, with the Donghe settlement to the south of the bridge and the starting point of Dongfu Road towards Fuli Township, Hualien County to the north. The old Donghe Bridge was built in 1930 and designed by a Japanese engineer. To accommodate the terrain and preserve the giant rock formations in the river, half of the bridge was designed with an arch structure, while the other half features water-frame type piers, creating an interesting contrast between the two sides. This rare pier design is considered a bridge that best integrates with the natural environment and has been listed as one of the historical architecture sites by the Council for Cultural Affairs of Taiwan. The new Donghe Bridge was constructed in 1992, during the widening of the Coastal Highway, downstream from the old Donghe Bridge. A red steel arch bridge was built, featuring a simple and striking design, with a wooden pedestrian walkway laid on the bridge deck, allowing pedestrians to overlook the Pacific Ocean as they walk across.
