Amei Indigenous Cultural Center Introduction
The Amis Folk Center is located next to the Dongguan District Office in Duli, covering an area of approximately 2 hectares. The park features an outdoor performance plaza, a grandstand that can accommodate 2,000 spectators, an archery experience area, and traditional Amis houses. Currently managed by the Amis Gagen Band, it allows visitors to become sharpshooters, participate in DIY bead-making activities, create traditional musical instruments like the pan flute, or enjoy performances of traditional Amis songs and dances. It has become a great place to experience Amis culture and is also an excellent recreational spot for families. The Amis Folk Center was completed in November 1995 (the 84th year of the Republic). The main buildings, including the ritual house and dwelling, were modeled after hand-drawn maps by Japanese ethnologist Chichiyama Sukejiro, who surveyed the area in 1943 (the 32nd year of the Republic) in Guangfu Township, Hualien County, based on the residence of the priests in the Tabalang tribe in Hualien County. Visiting this site allows one to see the unique residential culture of the Amis people. In addition to exploring the distinctive architecture and appreciating the beauty of Amis construction, the Folk Center also offers exhibits of tribal artifacts, handicrafts, specialty products, and food services. Lastly, don’t miss the scheduled free performances featuring the resonant sounds of traditional Amis instruments such as the gagen (bamboo bell) and nose flute, which recreate the authentic music of the Amis. If you have the opportunity to visit next time, be sure to stay awhile to enjoy a performance by the Amis Gagen Band!
