Amis Folk Center Introduction
The Amis Folk Center is located next to the Taitung District Office and covers an area of about 2 hectares. The park features an outdoor performance square, a grandstand that can accommodate 2,000 spectators, an archery experience area, and traditional Amis houses. It is currently operated by the Amis Gageng Band, allowing visitors to become sharpshooters, DIY craft Amis beadwork, traditional musical instruments like the bamboo flute, or enjoy traditional Amis song and dance performances. It has not only become a great place to experience Amis culture but also a fun destination for families. The Amis Folk Center was completed in November 1995. The main buildings, the ceremonial house and traditional house, were built based on hand-drawn maps by Japanese ethnologist Shigetaro Chikuyama from a survey conducted in 1943 in Guangfu Township, Hualien County, modeled after the priest's residence in the Tabang community of Hualien County. A visit here allows you to observe the unique residential culture of the Amis people. In addition to exploring the distinctive architecture and understanding the beauty of Amis architecture, the folk center also has exhibits of tribal artifacts, handmade crafts, local specialties for sale, and food services. Lastly, don't miss the regular free performances, where the powerful singing, accompanied by unique Amis instruments such as the Gageng (bamboo percussion) and nose flute, showcases the most authentic music of the Amis. If you have the chance to visit next time, consider waiting to enjoy a performance by the Amis Gageng Band!
