Amis Folk Center Introduction
The Amis Folk Center is located next to the headquarters of the East Coast National Scenic Area Administration in Duli, covering an area of approximately 2 hectares. The park features an outdoor performance square, a viewing platform that can accommodate 2,000 spectators, an archery experience area, and traditional Amis houses. Currently, it is managed by the Amis Gagen Band, allowing visitors to try their hand at archery, DIY Amis bead-making, and playing traditional musical instruments like the pangcah flute, or enjoying traditional Amis song and dance performances. It has become a great place to experience Amis culture as well as a fun spot for families. The Amis Folk Center was completed in November 1995 and the main structures, including the ceremonial house and traditional dwellings, are modeled after hand-drawn maps from Japanese ethnologist Chikuyama Toyotarō, who conducted research in Guangfu Township, Hualien County, in 1943, inspired by the homes of priests in the Tabalan community. Visiting here provides insight into the unique living culture of the Amis people. In addition to exploring the unique architecture and understanding the beauty of Amis construction, the center also features tribal relic exhibits, handicrafts, local specialties, and food services. Lastly, don't miss the regular free performances, where vibrant singing accompanied by traditional Amis instruments like the gagen (bamboo chimes) and nose flute brings the authentic music of the Amis people to life. If you have the opportunity to visit next time, be sure to wait a while to enjoy a performance by the Amis Gagen Band!
