Polar Palace Introduction
Beiji Temple, located in Wukeng Settlement of Kinmen, is an important center of faith for the local residents. The temple was built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty and has a long history, primarily dedicated to Xuantian Shangdi, the guardian deity of the village. The shrine on the right side enshrines Guanyin, while the left side is devoted to the deities Enzhugong and Enzhuniang, collectively offering protection and blessings for the villagers' health and well-being. Beiji Temple is not only a site of religious belief but also the core of community bonding. Although the temple is not ornate, it is solemn and simple, with an unceasing flow of incense, maintaining ties with Longfeng Temple in neighboring Guanao, showcasing the deep religious network among the settlements in Kinmen. Historically, Wukeng was a coastal salt village, but over the last century, due to sedimentation, the coastline has gradually receded, and after the completion of the Tiandun seawall in 1976, the settlement is now about one kilometer away from the coast. Despite the changes in the landscape, Beiji Temple remains standing in the village, symbolizing the connection between the past and the present, tradition and daily life. When visiting Wukeng, it's worthwhile to step into Beiji Temple and experience the local faith and historical memory contained within this old temple.
