Gan Ben Tang Cake Bakery Introduction
The first generation, Mr. Chen Qing-ji, sold milk from a farm across from the current Zhongyi Elementary School during the Japanese colonial period. The second generation, Mr. Chen Ben-chang, the founder of Ganben Tang, opened a Japanese confectionery store on Dashi Street (now Section 1 of Minsheng Road) in Tainan with Japanese master Tan Ganxiu. The store was named "Ganben Tang" after the two of them. The third generation, Mr. Chen Mao-xiong, the second son, took over and transformed Ganben Tang into a Western pastry shop. In 2006, the fourth generation, Mr. Chen Yi-zhang and his daughter-in-law, Ms. Hsieh Yi-lun, continued the business. Mr. Chen Yi-zhang also studied the art of making traditional sweets in Japan and worked at several five-star hotels in Taipei before inheriting the family business. He has integrated various techniques from both Japanese and Taiwanese traditions. Since taking over Ganben Tang, while striving to maintain traditional flavors, he has also continuously developed new products to adapt to modern trends and bring new life to the old shop.
