Must-visit attractions in Nangan for a battlefield tour To deeply experience the military atmosphere of Matsu, visiting the Iron Fort must be included in your travel itinerary! Located on the independent rock reef by the seaside in Ren'ai Villagen, you can immediately feel the somber atmosphere of the battlefield. This strategically rugged terrain, which is convenient for observing sea movements, was once developed into a military stronghold. It was guarded day and night by the most elite amphibious frogman unit on the western coastline. Due to the needs of the defense works, the interior of the reef was hollowed out, covered with concrete bunkers painted in camouflage, and equipped with green protective netting. Even the cliffs by the shore were filled with shards of glass and iron bars to prevent enemy divers from sneaking in or launching ambushes, standing tall amidst the waves. Inside the Iron Fort, beneath the concrete pathway, are hollowed-out tunnels with clear traces of the hard granite walls. On both sides of the passage, you can see well-organized spaces such as former underground stone chambers, shooting holes, gun emplacements, rooms, restrooms, and kitchens. Although it may be small, it is fully equipped. In the past, due to the fort's remote location, military dogs were stationed for defense, making it the only military dog with a rank in that defense area. Following the tunnels to the top, you can overlook the sea and see the quarters for the military dogs. To this day, with the smoke of war long gone, this small rock reef, once a coastal defense stronghold, still reveals the spirit of "iron-blooded tenacity and a maritime fortress."
