The must-visit attraction at Nangan for a battlefield tour is the Iron Fort. To deeply experience the military atmosphere of Matsu, you must include this site on your travel route! Arriving at the independent reef on the Iron Fort by the seaside in Ren'ai Village, you can immediately feel the solemn atmosphere of the battlefield. This area, due to its rugged terrain and advantageous position for observing the movements on the sea, was once developed into a military stronghold. It was defended day and night by an elite amphibious reconnaissance unit on the west coast. Due to the need for defensive structures, the interior of the reef was hollowed out, covered with concrete bunkers, painted with camouflage paint, and equipped with green protective mesh. Additionally, shards of glass and iron rods were embedded along the cliffs to prevent underwater spies from infiltrating or launching surprise attacks, standing tall amidst the waves. Inside the Iron Fort, beneath the concrete path, there are hollowed tunnels with vivid traces of the hard granite walls. On both sides of the passage, you can see the former underground chambers, firing points, gun emplacements, rooms, restrooms, and kitchen areas orderly lined up. Though small, the fort is fully equipped and even had military dogs for defense because of its remote location; it was the only area with a military-ranked dog. Following the tunnels to the top, you can have a panoramic view of the sea and also see the accommodations for the military dogs. Today, with the smoke of war fading away, this small reef, once a coastal defense stronghold, still exudes the spirit of "iron-blooded ruggedness and a maritime fortress.”

Tiefort Introduction

The must-visit attraction in Nangan for a battlefield pilgrimage. If you want to deeply experience the military atmosphere of Matsu, you must include the Iron Fort in your travel itinerary! Upon arriving at the independent rock reef by the Iron Fort in Ren'ai Village, you can immediately feel the solemn atmosphere of the battlefield. The site's rugged terrain, conducive to monitoring sea movements, was once designated as a military stronghold defended day and night by the most elite amphibious frogman units along the western coastline. Due to defense needs, the interior of the reef was hollowed out and covered with concrete bunkers, painted in camouflage, and equipped with grass-green protective nets. Additionally, the cliffs at the shore were embedded with shards of glass and iron bars to prevent enemy sabotage and attacks, standing steadfast amid the waves. Inside the Iron Fort beneath the concrete pathway, the excavated tunnels reveal hard granite wall markings, while the sides of the passage showcase an array of former underground stone chambers, gun ports, artillery emplacements, rooms, toilets, and kitchens, all neatly arranged. Although small, it is fully equipped. In the past, due to the remote location of the Iron Fort, military dogs were stationed for defense—these were the only military dogs in the defense area with military ranks. Following the tunnels to the top provides an unobstructed view of the sea's movements, as well as the quarters for the military dogs. Today, as the smoke of war has faded, this small rock reef, once a coastal stronghold, reveals the spirit of "iron-blooded bravery and maritime fortress."
